Michael Walker Chaney, 70, of Hertford, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at his home, surrounded by family.
Michael “Mike” Chaney was born in Norfolk, VA on January 11, 1956, he was the son of the late Richard H. Chaney Sr. and Frances W. Chaney.
He was a dedicated, loving husband and father. Michael loved to spend time outdoors fishing and wood working but nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family and loved ones. He was a shipwright at Norfolk Naval Shipyard until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother ,Richard H. Chaney Jr. and brother, David C. Chaney.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 45 years, Susan Chaney; his daughter, Andrea Powell (Mark); his son, Cameron Chaney (Jessica). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Ellis Powell, Lawson Powell, Connor Chaney and Addison Chaney. He was a loving uncle to Richard Chaney III (April); great-uncle to Richard Chaney IV (Angel); and brother-in-law Tony St. Jacques (Laurie).
He is also survived by many special family members and his special K-9 companion “Wink”.
A visitation will take place at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home at 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC 27944 Monday, March 16, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will take place at Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home at 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC 27944 on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Reverend Daniel Vester. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 8100 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Parkinson’s Disease Association.
