Michael Clarke Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
Born for a Firetruck
Jack Clarke may have been a New York City police officer, but from the very beginning his youngest son, Michael, had this affinity for firefighting.

"When he was young, he just loved to sit in the engines at the fire house," said Michael Clarke's father, who remembers giving his son that bright red firetruck he pedaled around in.

And so, even though he became a top student at Wagner College and a star on the hockey team, it was not a surprise to his father when Michael Clarke joined the Fire Department three years ago.

Firefighter Clarke, 27, was delighted several months ago to be transferred from Staten Island to Engine 8 and Ladder 2 on East 51st Street in Manhattan, "because there was much more action in Manhattan," his father said.

Sept. 11 was a scheduled day off; Firefighter Clarke went to work because he had switched days with another firefighter.

Now, at Wagner College, they have retired Michael Clarke's hockey number — 34. His father misses those regular phone calls from him, the ones that came to mean so much more after Jack Clarke's wife, Eileen, died three years ago.

"He'd call every day," the father recalls. "And he'd say, 'Hi, Pop. How you doing?' "

Michael last night an announcement was made that our Navy seals got Osama Bin Laden the mastermind of 9/11/2001. I am sure you heard the people at the foot of the world trade center site chanting USA,USA, USA! And they where just letting all of you know that on this day was to them a victory but also a sadder day because it reminded them all of missing all of you! Michael your family, your fellow fire fighter brothers , and a distant freind who will wear your name this year on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Our promise to you is that we will never leave our guard down , be supportive of our first responders and NEVER FORGET! RIP.

I visited ground zero back in April 07 where I saw a bouquet of flowers with a picture of Michael pinned to it with a note from his daughter. It was one of the most numbing moments of my life reading the note left by his daughter. I took a photo of the picture itself as I cried. The photo stays with me. The Clarke family is the family that I always pray for. God bless them and comfort them always...sincerely

OMG 8 YEARS!! Mikey I can't believe you have been gone from us for 8 years. We love you & miss you more everyday. We will be at your firehouse on Friday with the guys. Alot of the guys have retired but they always come back to the house to honor you & all the guys we lost that day! The teach the probies all about you & they respect you as if they knew you personally. I wonder everyday what life would be like if that day never happened. Where would we all be? Would we have bought houses next to each other like you & Jimmy always joked about?

I just wanted to tell you how much I miss you & think of you every day.

February 14, 2006

Dear Michael,
I am your younger cousin Raul Torres III, I know I never got to meet you and hang with you, but knowing your Dad and brother is like knowing you. In the past 5 years I have heard alot about you from my mother you are all over our home. You are a special person to us all and not just for that day in Sept. Just for you being you and doing what you love the most, saving lives and ending up giving up yours.
I wanted you to know I am Honored to have asked your Dad if I could take your name for my Conformation and for your Dad to be my Sponsor but your brother Jimmy stood in for him. I am very Proud to be a part of you and your life, I will NOT let you down. I am now deciding to go into the Army or become one of NY Bravest as you did. I hope I can be as brave as you are and as special as you are.

To Mike and Family..

Even though I never met you, I just want you to know that on this 4th year, you have another family that prays for you and those who miss and love you.

My name is Lisette Clark. My husbands name is Michael J. Clark and my six year old son is also named Michael J. Clark.

The first time I heard your name was on the one year anniversary of that terrible day. I was in my car, dropping my son off at pre-school and mourning a friend from Cantor Fitzgerald that never made it home that day. All of a sudden, I heard your name and my heart sank.

I spent the rest of that day trying to find out about you via the internet and newspapers. I remember the first time I saw your face, the first time I realized you were a fire fighter. When I knew that you were there by choice, not by chance. I am heartbroken for your family. And I think of you every year at this time. Everytime I hear your name called out during the memorials, I say a prayer. I did not need to meet you to know what kind of man you are. You tried to save people on that terrible day.

When my son is old enough to know, he will be told that he is lucky enough to share a name with a man who is a true American Hero.

Thank you for all you did that day. You have another Clark family in NJ praying for yours in NY. God Bless.

Dear Mikey,

Tomorrow will be 4 years since we saw you last at Tommy and Allison's Labor Day Party.

They say over time it is supposed to get easier...well, I want to meet the person who coined that phrase and just punch them in the nose!

We miss you as much 4 years later as we did then. We are always thinking of you and missing you more and more. Sometimes it is like you are right there in the room laughing with us when Jimmy does something goofy.

You are going to be honored at the White House on the 9th. Dad and Jimmy will be there as proud of you as ever! You have no idea how much they miss you. They are so proud that you where a firefighter. Well, I have rambled on enough for this time.

Dear Mikey

Well the 3rd was 3 years since we saw you last at Tommy & Allison's Labor Day Party. We where not even going to go until Dad called and said you where going to stop by the party when you got off work. So we got dressed & went because we missed you and wanted to spend sometime with you. Well it is 3 years later & we still miss you and want to spend time with you. We take it one day at a time, but there is this big hole in our lifes that there just is no way to fill. Not a day goes by that you do not pop into our thoughts or our conversation.

The family will be at Ladder 2 on the 11th with the families of your brothers. We will remember and honor all of you on that day and every September 11th for as long as we live.

You probably already know this but Lt. Woods is now Capt. Woods. As you know with the promotion comes a transfer. We cried the day we found out, because there is such a connection between Tommy and your brother and it felt like another little part of you was lost to us. We hope to see him on the 11th and visit him soon at his new house.

I miss my friend.

Love always your "Sis"

Hey Mikey,

Well the 10th was 1 year since we honored you with the street naming @ Valdemar. It is not getting any easier to deal with this horrible event. The 9/11 commission is in the news 24/7 and there is alot of mixed feelings about it. Mikey, if you had died in a "regular" fire we might and I stress might be able to cope a little better with it. But it was not a "regular" fire and I do not think that there is a day that it is not in the news. It is so hard for families to try cope. Mikey you would be so proud of Jimmy he is trying to cope but there are just days that a song on the radio, a Simpson/Seinfeld show, a hockey moment reminds him of you and he just loses it. But when he is around the Tiffany and Jimmy he is the pillar of strength and I know that you are helping him through it. I just had to acknowledge the 10th and share with you my feelings. This is kinda of therapy for me!

I miss my friend!

Love always your "Sis",

Well Jimmy finally decided that we could have a cake for his birthday! So, we are having a little party for him on his birthday 1/10. He picked out his own cake and because he always shared the day with you for the 27 years you had together, he chose a cake with a firefighter on it! He misses you terribly Mikey and this week has been really hard on him. I know you are looking over him and always keeping him safe. Happy birthday Mikey, we miss you!

We have treasured memories of you growing up with Eileen, Jack and Jimmy playing around in your house and ours. They were so very proud of you. We think of you, your mom, dad and Jimmy often.

I am sitting right now in my english class watching a documentary of 9/11 and it gives me goosebumbs throughout my body when I think about all the suffering and pain of all the victims went trough. Not a day goes by that we don't think of you. A song on the radio...a smart comment by Jimmy, that screams you...A Simpson episode, hockey moment..........

It just goes on everyday.

Hey little brother,

You know your brother & I are country music nuts, well Jimmy heard this song a couple weeks ago & we cannot hear it without thinking of our Mikey & crying like big babies. It is our new "you suck song" So, here it goes.......

"I Believe"

Every now and then soft as breath upon my skin

I feel you come back again

And it's like you haven't been gone a moment from my side

Like the tears were never cried

Like the hands of time are holding you & me

And with all my heart I'm sure we're closer then we ever were

I don't have to hear or see, I've got all the proof I need

There are more than angels watching over me

I believe, I believe

That when you die your life goes on

It doesn't end here when you're gone

Every soul is filled with light

It never ends and if I'm right

our love can even reach across eternity

I believe, I believe

Forever, you're a part of me

Forever, in the heart of me

And I'll hold you even longer if I can

The people who see the most

Say that I believe in ghosts

And if that makes me crazy, then I am

'Cause I believe

There are more than angels watching over me

I believe, I believe

WE BELEIVE, MIKEY!

"I miss my Friend!"

Love your "little" sis & your big brother,

Dear Michael,

Let's just say everyone really misses you. Dad misses your phone calls saying you'd be home for dinner. Kym misses having her "little brother" over on weekends. Tiffany misses her trips to the city, and Jimmy misses talking football. The kids really miss their uncle. And let's just say Lori really loves you and misses having you around.

Now for me, not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I'm having a real hard time with this. There are so many emotions flowing through me. I know it is not right, but I am so angry that you were in that tower and I'm feeling guilty that I was not there with you and that after it happened, I did not help look for you, there was just so much going on. I'm very hurt that I never told you how sorry I am for all the things I did. I'm very lucky to have been blessed with a brother like you, even if our time together was so short.

I'm very proud of you. You touched so many lives in your 27 years, from the kids you coached, to friends, neighbors, family and the lives you saved that day. I'll make sure no one forgets you. You are that special person that comes along once in a lifetime.

How do you deal with something like this, when the person you'd turn to is the person you are mourning?

I lost more then a brother on September 11, 2001.

I MISS MY FRIEND!

Love always,

Your big brother,

Jimmy

Before this summer, the name Michael J. Clarke meant nothing to me. One day I saw an ad for Macy's and the 911 bracelets. I ordered two -- one for my sister, one for me. When they came, I thought I'd look at both of them and decide which to keep. I opened Michael's first -- right away I felt a connection, so I kept it.

I wore it faithfully every day. Whenever I was reminded of that awful day, I touched the bracelet and thought about Michael. I felt it was the least I could do for someone who was so brave.

I did a search on the internet a while back and saw Mike's face for the first time. Even though I will never know him, I kind of feel like I did. He looked like a wonderful young man.

A few weeks ago I lost my bracelet and was heartbroken. Every morning I put it on before I left the house and thought about Mike -- and now it was gone. And now, every morning (even without the bracelet) before I leave the house, I still think about him. I guess the jewelry wasn't the important thing.

Macy's has since referred me to a site where I can special order the bracelet with his name on it. That's where I found this guest book and read all the wonderful entries, which inspired me to write and tell his family that there are probably many of us out here who, although we never met him, keep him close to our hearts.

God Bless.

My sincerest condolences go to his father Mr.Clarke, his brother Jimmy , his sister-in-law Kym & his niece & nephew, Tiffany & Jimmy & all of Mike's closest friends & family. My prayers are with you today & always.

I don't feel any words can do justice to the kind of man Mike was or would have become but he is OUR HERO!!! Anyone that knew Mike, knew him as the kindest, sweetest, most gentile man alive. His smile & optimism would bring joy to everything he touched. He wanted to give back to the community, help others & make a difference in the world & he accomplished that in no uncertain terms.

Anyone that met Mike & spent time with him was blessed to have their path cross his. I'll always remember the good times we had & Thank God for them.

Although he would hate us saying so, Mike will never be forgotten & always remembered as the true AMERICAN HERO that he was. I know he's watching over all of us.

He will always live on in our hearts, thoughts & memories & you can be sure that when I have children of my own, I will be certain to tell them about a True Modern Day American Hero.

Dear Michael,

As your Cousin, I am Proud to say, in the eyes of so many, you are a Hero. In my heart you will always be now and forever, we didnt get to spend much time together, but just the same I do Love you and Miss you dearly. As for all the FDNY who gave thier lives that day, I pray every day, that you are all in the arms of God, you are in a better place now and at peace, hope you are watching over us all.

I watch the tapes every day of when you were just a child and I cant believe how fast you did grow into a man, and to become a Fire Fighter for the Greatest City in the world, was unbelievable. I always thought you would become a Pro Hockey Player first. But you did the unbelievable, you chose to save lives, and knowing the risk involved.

Well Cous, I love you, in my heart and prays you will remain forever, for all the others of 9-11, I pray for you all.

June 14, 2002

Hi Mike, It's Carl's mom again. I attended a luncheon the other day and your Dad and brother Jim were there. It was to honor all the fallen firefighters from Staten Island. They made a plaque with all your names on it and they will place it in the Ferry Terminal. Your father gave my husband a beautiful hunting knife with a firefighter and an angel with her arm around him on the handle. My husband was very touched by the gift. Your brother Jim gave the same knife and your bracelet to Gov. Pataki. None of us can truly understand what happened and that you guys are not coming home, we just can't get it!

I'm sorry that I never met you and I'm sorry that I had to meet your family this way. I really like your dad and brother and Kym. I wish I could have met you, but I know we will all be together one day.

Tell Carl I send my love and say hi to Ragu too! Thanks, Carl's Mom.

Unlike some of the earlier entries here, I had the great honor of knowing Mike and his family for over 15 years. We grew up on the same block playing stickball, street hockey and ice hockey, just to name a few. Mike was the best damn goal tender that I ever played with. I loved playing for him because with him guarding the net you knew you would win the game. I dreaded playing against him because scoring a goal on him was almost impossible.

His commitment to become that great hockey player was driven by the same set of ideals that drove him to become a brave NYC Firefighter. His will to be the best and a heart of gold are what made him a hero on our darkest day.

He was also one of the nicest and most caring guys I know, always willing to go the extra mile.

He made his family and friends proud every day of his life and they should continue to be proud of him always.

We all miss you, Mike.

Hi Mike, You and I have never met, I am Carl's mom. Next time you see him in heaven, tell him I said hi,and send my love. I have met your brother and his wife several sad times now. I wish we were meeting for happier reasons than we have been. He came to Carl's benefit and we talked about his having one for you. I will be there when he does. it is very hard for us to understand this horrible and senseless act of murder. The killing of thousands of innocent people. I think we all feel like we're sharing the same nightmare, and we can't wake up. We are so very proud of all the firefighters who ran into those buildings on sept. 11. It has been said that "all gave some and some gave all" that is so very true. I wish that you, Carl and Mike had been one of the one's that gave "some" and not "all"!!! I know that i will meet you one day, until then rest well and know that you will never be forgotten. Love Carl's Mom

I am sorry I never got to know Michael. His mother would of been

very proud of him. His mother lived

I was on the hockey team at St. Peter's when Mike was one of the assistant coaches. He was a goalie coach, and I was a forward, but he was always there ready to help anyone out. Wish you were still here Mike.

Thank you. Thank you for choosing a job that so few are capable of. Thank you for your bravery, for your honor and commitment to your profession. Please now watch over us, and protect us the way you did when you were on earth. To run into a building, when everybody else is running out--with out hesitation, takes more than being just a "regular" guy. It takes being an angel. God Bless you, your family and all the men and woman you worked with before September 11th, and all you work with now. You will not be forgotten.

Fellow Staten Islander. Never had the honor of knowing you however, I am alive today because you and your brothers efforts. Such a young age and to be taken. It's truly unfair. I wish your family strength. May God Bless You In Heaven. Rest In Peace.

We thank Michael and Jack for dedicating their lives to help others as a firefighter and a police officer. Such professions come with brave, warm and caring hearts. We are deeply sorry for our nation's loss of Michael. May Michael's courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Michael. Our hearts cry with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Michael and Family,

On this Christmas Day I want you to know you are not forgotten. I never had the pleasure to meet you, but I wanted to let you know you and your loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

I believe Christmas is the time for Angels and Michael, I know on September 11 you and so many other wonderful firefighters received their Angel Wings. I also believe Angels have special stars all their own and I know yours is shining brightly in the darkest of night!

Rest In Peace, Michael!
