Michael J. Conaway

Michael Conaway, 76, of Oswego, passed away at home on January 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Mike was a man who believed in staying busy, working hard, and earning his own way in life. From a very young age, he showed an uncommon drive and independence. At just 12 years old, Mike became one of the youngest licensed taxidermists, an early sign of the determination and skill that would define his life.

As a young man, Mike worked tirelessly-trapping, shoveling snow, working on the mucks, and delivering newspapers. He raised homing pigeons with his father and his brother Frank, and by age 15 had earned enough money to pay his own way to Boy Scouts Philmont Camp in New Mexico. Mike also proudly served in the National Guard.

Mike went on to a long and respected career, working for Niagara Mohawk for 22 years. He later worked for the New York State Construction Fund, the New York State Thruway Authority, and the New York State Canal Corporation. He was also a certified inspector at nuclear power plants throughout New York State, a role that reflected his precision, responsibility, and technical expertise.

Mike never had idle hands. He enjoyed motorcycles, motocross, and drag racing motorcycles, and was also a licensed airplane pilot. He was skilled in welding and machine work and, later in life, found great enjoyment in gardening. Mike adored his family, and his children and grandchildren were the loves of his life.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann (Van Brocklin), his children, Pat (Rui) Conaway, Casey Conaway-Towne, Erik (Cayla) Van Brocklin, his grandchildren, Tyler, Aiden, Brandy, Allison, Maks, Elowyn, and Juniper. He also leaves behind his siblings, Bridget (Steve) Williams, of Columbus, Ohio, Frank (Sue) Conaway, of Oswego, Kathleen (Don) Wallace, of Spring Valley, Arizona, Colleen Helvie (Ralph Rota) of New Haven, as well as many loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Jane Ferris Conaway, siblings Jane (Edward) Jakelsky and Thomas (Lorraine) Conaway, and nephews Stanley Helvie and Owen Schwartz.

Services will be held privately for the family. Burial will be held in St. Peter Cemetery. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of Nelson Funeral Home.
