It is with great sadness that I learned today about Mike´s passing.
My mind floated back to those early days at GSI Park Central in Dallas. The year would have been around 1980, and Mike was in charge of global support for TIPEX, Texas Instruments' preeminent seismic exploration processing software. I had just transferred from Madrid to the U.S., and Mike and I would frequently meet over lunch in the cafeteria to try and solve the pressing problems of the day!
We both moved to Houston shortly after GSI merged with Halliburton to form HGS. We would often get involved in supporting international sites of both companies, working closely together. In the mid 1990's, Mike and I were pulled into assisting with the integration of two organizations, after the purchase of HGS by Western Atlas. Mike was tasked with the unification of two distinctly disparate software packages, while I was to help combine the two IT environments.
Mike was a man with a truly artistic flair. We would often talk of his love for ballet, the theater, and other eclectic things of life. After work on Fridays, we would meet for a couple of beers with friends at the Sherlock´s Pub at the Carillion Plaza. When he retired, we celebrated his long and illustrious career with co-workers from GSI, HGS, and Western Geophysical, since he was highly admired and respected by many, many geophysicists and geoscientists all over the world.
I remember Mike and Anne´s lovely home in Houston, with their stunning collection of colorful tiles of every shape and kind, collected from various parts of the globe, most artistically and intricately arranged around the living rooms. What an eye for beauty and aesthetics they both had!
Mike, you will truly be missed by all your friends. May your soul rest in peace.
