During 72-73 I was hired by the Chester County DA's Office as an undercover drug agent. Mike Cotter was assigned as my primary contact detective, and at the time only four people from the DA's Office knew of my existences, but only one risked his life several nights a week to exchange drugs I purchased and he provided me with more money and we would sit by the light of a flashlight fill out reports and evidence tags, sometimes we would start at 12 or 1 am and last three or four hours. This was time when he could have been home in a warm bed with this wife instead of a dark graveyard of alleyway. Mike and I connected also immediately due to us both being Vietnam Vets and police detectives. It's not as glamorous as it appears on television and at times being away from my wife and baby, who for safety reasons lived in another state, I would be stressed out for not only the dangers of the job, but the lonely feelings anyone whoever has worked undercover understands. But, Mike was always very keen on picking this up and as we were getting ready to depart he was grab my hand and pull be toward him in a manly way and say to me what any Vietnam Vet would understand, "It don't mean nothing". Then with the smile and grin that only Mike had we would go our separate ways and I would be left with a good feeling. When I came out from undercover we had made 177 drug cases involving the two Motorcycle Gangs the Pagans and Warlocks. I was the Hero of the Day, but without Mike's efforts and encouragement my day to shine may have not been possible. I know in my heart that the day Mike passed away that night a star in Heaven grew dimmer and then out. Those words we spoke in Vietnam still has the meaning for all of Vets. But, for you your life did mean something the friendships you made, the dedication to the County and to your Country you served, the love you shared with your wife Betty and your children that light will never go out. I know that knowing you and the friendship we shared made me a better man. Thank you for that and your light and that Mike Cotter smile and grin will forever be in my heart and soul. Betty thank you for the kind words and concern you had for me when you told me of Mike's passing......but, that is the Cotter way.......Larry.

Mike and I served together in the DA's office for many years. Always hardworking, he had great instincts into police work. Many cases were solved because of his dedication and leadership. A true professional. A real loss not only to his family and friends but to the law enforcement community as well.
