Michael DiGirolamo

Michael DiGirolamo, a dedicated leader in aviation and the beloved heart of his family, passed away on January 29, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Michael's life was defined by integrity, kindness, and an unwavering support of those around him.

Marrying Kris in 1991 began a cherished partnership that spanned nearly 35 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Amber and Kristina, inspiring in them a love of aviation and travel. Michael loved helping others plan trips, always ready with the best airline routes, places to stay, and must-visit restaurants. He especially enjoyed sharing stories with his four grandchildren about the places he visited, from being one of the first people to experience the magic of Disneyland to his time in the Army helping to establish the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Through his stories, he made the world feel both vast and accessible.

His legacy is not only in the family who adored him, but in the many lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Michael's professional life reflected his passion for aviation. Starting his career at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in 1975, he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Executive Director of Airport Operations for Los Angeles World Airport Department, overseeing operations, security, and safety at LAX, Ontario International, Palmdale Regional, and Van Nuys airports. Michael took particular pride in his role in building the Tom Bradley International Terminal but nothing compared to the joy he felt when the jet bridges opened at the new Ontario International Airport terminal in the late 1990s.

Throughout his career, Michael stood as a calming force during turbulent times. In the chaotic aftermath of September 11th, as aviation security was fundamentally re-imagined, Michael's calm leadership helped guide multiple airports through unprecedented changes. When the bird flu pandemic threatened to disrupt vital Asia-Pacific routes - routes he'd worked for years to cultivate - he worked tirelessly to maintain confidence and connectivity.

He also served as Deputy Executive Director for Operations at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport and contributed both domestically and internationally as a member of several organizations that advanced the security and safety of the industry.

Even after retiring in 2010, Michael remained a leader and mentor, serving on the San Diego Regional Airport Authority Advisory Committee and always keeping a close eye on the industry's latest developments. He was a proud graduate of California State University, Northridge, holding a degree in Urban Planning and advanced certifications in airport management through McGill University in Montreal. He was an Eagle Scout and later obtained a private pilot's license.

Michael's family and friends will forever remember his warmth. He leaves behind his loving wife, Kristina; his two daughters, Kristina Daum and Amber Albrecht, and their spouses, Kenny Daum and Sean Albrecht; and four cherished grandchildren, Rylee A., Cooper A., Kenzie D., and Kyley D. Michael's legacy of love, dedication, and gentle strength lives on through all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed.
