Michael Fields Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bennie Smith Funeral Homes - Salisbury on Mar. 23, 2026.
OBITUARY

Sergeant First Class Michael A. Fields Sr. (U.S. Army, Retired), age 73, of Salisbury, Maryland, transitioned from this life on March 17, 2026.

Born on July 6, 1952, in Salisbury, Maryland, Michael was the beloved son of the late Rev. Dr. Oris P. Fields Sr. and the late Mary Ida Fields. He was raised in a strong foundation of faith, growing up in the church under the leadership of Rev. Charles H. Mack at St. James A.M.E. Zion Church in Salisbury, Maryland. Later, when his father was appointed to St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Ross Point, Delaware, Michael continued his spiritual journey, lending his voice to the Praise and Worship Ministry-a voice many would come to know and love.

Michael received his early education in Salisbury, Maryland, attending Salisbury Elementary School and Salisbury High School before graduating from Wicomico Senior High School in June 1971. During his school years, he was an exceptional athlete, running track and playing football. He held a track and field record in hurdles and also played football for the Salvation Army on Oak Street in Salisbury during his youth.

Shortly after graduation, Michael enlisted in the United States Army on November 2, 1971. He faithfully served his country for 20 years, retiring honorably on December 31, 1991, with the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7). During his distinguished military career, he served as a recruiter for the final ten years, guiding and mentoring others into military service.

On June 1, 1974, Michael married the love of his life, Carolyn S. Fields, in Augusta, Georgia, beginning a lifelong union rooted in love and family.

Following his military retirement, Michael continued his service to the community by working as a correctional officer in Cambridge, MD.

Michael was truly the life of the party, energetic, charismatic, and full of laughter. His sense of humor was unforgettable, often compared to the lively spirit of Mr. Brown from Madea. He had a natural ability to bring joy into any room he entered. Known for his deep love of 70s soul music, Michael also possessed a beautiful singing voice that left a lasting impression on everyone who heard it.

He was more than a father, he was a favorite uncle, a cherished cousin, a loyal friend, and a man whose presence could never be ignored. His love for family and his vibrant personality created memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Dr. Oris P. Fields Sr. and Mary Ida Fields; his siblings William Doane and Sharon Fields-West; and his brothers-in-law, Pete Henry and James R. West Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn S. Fields; his children, Michael A. Fields Jr. and Crystal S. Dennard (Son-in-Love Alexander Duffy); his grandchildren, Alexander S. Dennard III, Jay'Sean M. Dennard, Aalaiyah Bailey-Fields, Ananda S. Dennard, and Jordan C. Dennard, and bonus grandson Lyrik A. Duffy; his great-grandson, Jayonn M. Jackson.

He is also survived by his siblings, Cleo Henry, Larry Fields Sr., Oris P. Fields Jr. (Audrey), and Cresandre Barkley (Roscoe); his sister-in-love Debbie Fields; special loved ones Marilyn "Peaches" Reid and Bonita Williams, nephew Michael Keith Fields, and maternal aunt Dorothy Coles; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
