Of Ft. Myers, Florida passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Michael was born in Rochester, New York to Robert Joseph Gianforte and Arlene (Paprocki) Gianforte. Mike is survived by his family: his former spouse, Heidi (Dorr) Gianforte with whom he shared many years, and their children, Lauren (spouse Andrew) (Gianforte) Andrews, of Tampa, FL, and Nicholas (spouse Chelsea) Gianforte of Austin, TX. His partner, Kelly Varricchio, was by his side in his later years. Mike is also survived by his brother, John (spouse Doris) Gianforte of Durham, NH, and his sister, Teri (spouse John March) (Gianforte) Schrader, of Hartford, as well as his aunts, Patricia (Paprocki) DeLoria of Churchville, NY, and Catherine Paprocki, of Quichee, VT. Mike's family includes his nieces and nephews, and their children, all of whom loved Uncle Mike dearly. Mike had scores of friends and colleagues, all of whom mourn his passing and celebrate their time with him through the years and chapters of his life. Mike loved his family deeply, and his beautiful smile and devotion to those he loved was vast and profound, even during the most challenging moments of his illness.
All who knew Mike, knew that at heart, he was a musician. Mike began playing the drums before he could reach the pedals on the bass drum, beginning by playing simple beats on the rubber pad and driving his family crazy. Along with his love of flying, Mike was equally comfortable on the ground, seated at his beloved drums all his life.
Mike had an extensive and accomplished career as a Captain for American Airlines, where he served as a pilot, as well as a check airman, carrying thousands of passengers and crews across and around the world for forty years. A cherished member of the American Airlines aviation family, Mike was known for his exceptional professionalism, unwavering dedication, and steadfast commitment to the development of countless pilots over the years. As a check pilot on both the Boeing 737 and 787, Mike brought not only a wealth of technical expertise but also a calm, reassuring presence in the flight deck. Throughout his forty years at American Airlines, Mike played a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of aviators. He was distinguished by his patience, his clear communication, and his ability to inspire confidence in every pilot he mentored. Mike's absence will be felt deeply across our community, and he will be remembered not only for his impressive career, but for the person he was-steadfast, generous, and deeply respected.
As we all join together in mourning the loss of Michael, a father, devoted partner, brother, colleague, and friend, we also honor and celebrate his life, which has touched so many and left a legacy and memories that will hold us and endure. A Celebration of Life for Mike will be held on July 23, 2025 at 10:00 AM, at Riverside Church, 8660 Daniels Parkway, Fort Myers, FL 33912. Pilots are invited to wear their uniform.
