Michael B "Mike" Gray, beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, October 16, 2025, surrounded by his children. Born on August 5, 1953, Mike lived a full and adventurous life with a deep appreciation for the outdoors, the thrill of discovery, and the simple joys found in everyday moments.
A lifelong member of the Illinois Valley Yacht Club (IVY Club), Mike found his greatest peace on the open water. Sailing wasn't just a pastime for him-it was a way of life. He cherished the wind in the sails, the camaraderie of his fellow sailors, and the quiet, peaceful moments that only the water could offer. He loved nothing more than a Saturday morning race on the Illinois River, and he delighted in sharing his passion for sailing with his son.
Starting at a young age, Mike's adventurous spirit took him around the world, eager to explore unfamiliar places and experiences. He enjoyed the peacefulness of hunting in quiet woods with friends and family. When he wasn't traveling, hunting, or sailing, you could find Mike in his kitchen, where he loved cooking for his family and friends. He was immensely proud of his family and loved sharing in his children's success. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons and shared many happy moments with them, quietly commenting on the way their bright minds and ideas would guide them to a successful life. Mike found deep joy in sharing the knowledge he'd gathered over the years with his children and grandchildren, and he was especially excited to welcome his first granddaughter, expected to arrive early next year.
Mike was a devoted employee of Hagerty Steel & Aluminum for 30 years. He cherished the friendships he made both within the company and while representing Hagerty to clients throughout the Midwest.
Mike is survived by his three children, Erin (Chris) Sparrow, Frank Gray, and Rose (Cam) Phillips; his two grandsons, Grayson and William Sparrow; and his three siblings, Matt (Gina) Gray, Cricket (Wally) Sawosko, and Jenny Brunjes (Barry Pollard). He had a contagious laugh, a bright smile, and a twinkle in his eye that would light up any room. Mike will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will hold a memorial luncheon for family and friends at the IVY Club on November 8th at 11:00am. Cremation Rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Mike's courageous battle against cancer, donations may be made to the OSF Cancer Institute in support of their mission to serve patients with endless care and love.
