Michael Inman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 23 to Aug. 24, 2023.
Michael Clarke Inman October 28, 1945 - August 20, 2023.

It is with profound sadness that the family of Michael Clarke Inman announces his passing on Sunday August 20, 2023 at the age of 77 years.

Born October 28,1945 to Richard and Iva Inman, in Cranbrook, B.C., they moved to Abbotsford when Mike was in elementary school. He later attended Abby Senior where he excelled in sports, with recognition as top athlete in his final year,2nd all-star at the 1964 BC Basketball Championship and was invited to BC Lions Football Camp for top high school players. He continued his football and basketball career at UBC, during which time he fell in love with a young nursing student, Charlotte Berg, whom he married in 1970. They later returned to Abbotsford to raise their family and Mike has been an active member of the community ever since.

Although he dreamed of having a career as a basketball coach, he quickly learned his temperament was meant for other things. He began working closely with Charlotte's father, Harry Berg, at HB Construction and found himself drawn to the civil construction and engineering field. His entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic lead to a successful career in the industry. Mike was highly regarded by fellow colleagues which led to positions such as President of the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association of BC. In 1993, he and Charlotte started their namesake company, MCI Construction, that they successfully ran until their retirement in 2000.

Having a deep love of all things sport, Mike enjoyed playing competitive fastball, skiing with his family, as well as playing Masters Basketball until 55 years of age. As a parent, he could always be found quietly on the sidelines or in the bleachers of his four children's sporting events. He was integral to the continuation and expansion of the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame, held a term as the President of the Valley Royals Track Club, and together, with his longtime friend Don Macdonald, was dedicated to the success of the Abbotsford Police City Basketball tournament.

Mike was best known for his integrity, generosity and loyalty to everyone around him. He loved spending time with his family and close friends at their summer property on the Sunshine Coast; fishing, boating and playing high stakes games of crib. Retirement winters were spent on the beaches of Mexico in the small town of Puerto Morelos with Charlotte and friends and family from near and far.

Mike will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte, four children, Paige (Ron), Kyle (Sarah), Courtney (Alex) and Ashleigh (James) and 12 grandchildren Michael was predeceased by his older sister Michele.

A service will be held on Wednesday August 30 at 3:00pm. For service details please email [email protected].

I was very saddened to hear of Micheal's passing and pass along condolences to Char and all the family. Micheal,( aka Rodent) and I shared a lot of boyhood time usually sports related...he was a true competitor!!! He did not like to lose...I had the opportunity to play with and against Micheal, namely in Fastpitch and badminton. He was an awesome catcher!!! and I believe he needed a shower after every game. Question: how did we ever survive that Mt. Baker experience??? We did have an Angel riding with us that day???
RIP friend!!!

Our best memories of Mike are the many years we shared our annual Nurse's Christmas gathering. During those many years, we shared joys and sorrows of parenting and life. He of course always wanted to hear how our boys were doing in basketball as our kids went to MEI and as many of you know, Mike always had a remark or two to make to us about that. Because I was usually in charge of thinking up a game to play, I also would get the sarcastic "tongue in cheek" remark about playing a "stupid" game, when of course he would always get into it and was often the most competitive. We also always waited for his ribbing of Charlotte when she had to get her camera set up "just so" to "take the annual picture! We will miss you Mike. Love Bob and Gloria Brandsma

So very sad to know that "Pa" is no longer with us. He was an amazing human, a great coach and a kind & loving person in my life. I know him from a pre-teen and he was very patient and accepting of me. I will never forget his eye rolls and shaking his head at me whenever I was out of line or attempting humour. I only did it as he had an amazing smile. Thinking of you Ma (Charlotte) Paige, Kyle, Cort, Ash and family.

I first knew Mike in 1970 from the twinkle in Charlotte's eyes. That has continued all the rest of the time. I knew of his wonderful nature and love for his family always through the light in Charlotte's eyes. Keep the light.

I am so saddened to hear of Mike´s passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to Charlotte and his amazing children and their families. He has left a mark on our community for his generosity but his active participation in so many things was what made him truly special. He was a permanent fixture on the sidelines when his kids were playing sports in high school and his commentaries were like no other. I loved our conversations and serving together on the Abbotsford Police City Basketball Tournament Committee. Those were great years. Sending lots of hugs and love to you all
