The Ice Cream is Good – a poem to remember the gifts of Dad and help us with healing on our loss of him.
By Melanie 01-27-2013

Dad, you are the provider, the protector;
Always working hard to keep the family safe,
And in humble service, you use your gifts to help others.
Don't think I didn't notice the life lessons you taught me about working hard,
Not wasting resources, being responsible, preparing for the future and sharing
with others.
Thinking back to a time –
Looking out my window, I saw you sand my driveway.
Didn't know you were coming –
But not surprised.
Same thing when you came with wood and stacked it;
Or strung Christmas lights when your grandson wanted some;
Or blew leaves into a pile for jumping, then blowing them for jumping in
again!
Late night, across two towns, you come with medicine for the teething
baby.
Later you come with clams, zucchini, tomatoes and strawberries.
You come again to build a TV stand, fix the door, the furnace, the
plumbing –
Remove a tree, start a generator –
Moving out or moving in another one with a need.
See our growing diverse family,
With its monthly birthday gatherings?
Your openness and love helped to create this.
Make a wish and blow the candles out –
But not while they're still on the cake (silly!)
Oh well…. Dad will have just the ice cream today!
Fast forward to when I last saw you –
Sitting up straight in your bed
Eating ice cream and barely catching your breath.
Worried, I say, “Are you sure you should have that right now?”
“It's always a good time for ice cream”
You say and finish it with a smile.
“OK, Dad, you are right”
And we laugh and say goodnight –
Not knowing it was for the last time on this earth.
I close my eyes and dream I see you now again,
Smiling and at peace in the Great North Woods.
Free from the distractions of the man-made kind.
Just the whisper of wind through the leaves,
The smell of dirt, moss on trees.
Within view of a curious deer,
Bubbling stream, flowing river.
A flirting splash from a nearby fish,
But pole cast aside for an endless dish –
To be shared now with Jesus.
It's another good time for ice cream!
Rest well, Dad, the provider, the protector.
I love you.
Your gifts were appreciated.
Your work here is done.

Thank you Mike for you, the love and family you created. I have been so honored to be part of your family. I will miss you at the end of the table playing cards and smoking your pipe as I walk through the door. I will miss our talks about gardens, mechanics, sawing wood, and yes...the Patriots. You will be forever in my heart. To Melanie, Patty, Cheryl and Jen...Dad would be so very proud to know Mom has been and will be in the very best hands and will not have to go through this journey alone. Love to you all.

Our thoughts are with you and your family Cindy. Please give our condolences to the girls (and their family) and tell them we are thinking of all of you.

We are so glad the girls had your '50th Anniversary Party' this past summer, it was so nice that everyone got to spend time with you and Mike. It was such a wonderful day, full of memories, that we will all cherish forever in our hearts.

Mike was a Wonderful Man, Son, Brother, Husband, Dad, Uncle, Cousin and Friend to all... I myself have wonderful childhood memories that I got to share a few of with Mike at the 50th Anniversary Party. We had a few chuckles and a real enjoyable time. I told him I LOVED the smell of his pipe and that he reminded me so much of Grampy Drake, Grampy smoked the same kind of tobacco....

Keep all your memories alive and share with each other, we will all miss him. Rest In Peace Mike, until we meet again...... Bonnie, and all of Aunt Dot's family. We love you... <3
