Michael Dane King, affectionately known as Mike or Mikey by all who knew him, passed away on December 7, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on September 11, 1946, in Cut Bank, Montana, to Carl and Evelyn (Eaton) King, Mike lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and love.
Mike graduated from Odessa Permian High School and went on to earn an Associate's degree in Applied Science from DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago in 1966, a testament to his skill and passion. His career was distinguished by his work as an Electronic Technician, beginning at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas, and later at NASA in Palestine, Texas, from 1974 to 1980. He concluded his professional journey at Goodyear Proving Grounds in San Angelo, Texas, where he worked from 1981 until his retirement in 2012.
A man of varied interests, Mike was passionate about classic cars, often attending car shows and enjoying weekly "church" meetings at Joe's. He was a cherished member of many local clubs to include The Corvette Club, Concho Classic Chevys and The Blues Society. He was also known for playing Santa for local children through out the years. His famous Sunday dinners with family will be missed by all who joined over the years.
His love for family was evident in his relationships with his children, Robbi and husband Pete Pena of Brownwood, Tracy King of San Angelo, and son, Michael King of San Angelo. He was a proud grandfather to Ryan Pena, Andrew Pena, Cole Phillipus, Shelby Phillipus, Raigan King, and Victoria Reumert, and a cherished great-grandfather to Peyton Pena and Ryan Pena Jr. of Brownwood and Presley Phillipus and Kinsley Phillipus of San Angelo, his special girls.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Carolyn Wilkins, and an infant sister.
He bravely battled Chronic Kidney Disease, receiving a kidney donation from his daughter Tracy in 2018, who always jokingly reminded him that he now had girl parts. Mike later faced 5 different forms of cancer with courage, grace and determination, never letting it stop him from getting up every day and being present.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel located at 402 Rio Concho Drive, San Angelo, Texas, with a memorial car show to follow. The family would like to invite Classic car enthusiasts to join in his honor.
