Michael Edwin Langlie was born on March 5, 1951 in
Hillsboro, OR to Verna & Helmer Tuss Langlie. He was the youngest of 3 children. The family moved in 1956 to Bemidji, MN to be closer to Nestor Falls, Ontario, where they spent their summers managing Arrowhead Camps & Resort (co-founded and built by Helmer Langlie and Bob Booren). Mike graduated from Bemidji HS (where he played hockey and baseball) in 1969. He started college that fall at Bemidji State, but left to help his brother on a building project in Bethel AK. He then moved to Colorado for a couple of years where he took up down hill skiing and skydiving! Around 1975 another project with his brother led to his return to Bethel where he met and married Maria Carl with whom he had 5 children.
Mike and his business partner, Gonders Hoffman started their own company, Hoffman-Langlie Homebuilders. They were quick and consistent building many homes and businesses. They later went on to found The Lumber Yard, which provided building materials to the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta region. He loved his business like it was his baby. His motto was not to do anything 'half-ass' in life. And it showed through his camaraderie with people and the success of the Lumber Yard.
Mike loved spending time with his children (and later his grandchildren) - playing, coaching, encouraging, and being their No.1 sports fan. He spent many hours playing basketball with his kids and their friends. He'd cook a full course Sunday breakfast or Sunday dinner. Mike had a hero dose of patience when it came to his family. Even when they were raising hell, or crying over homework, he kept his cool. He was big about "common sense", taking your time, and doing what was right.
Mike was a great provider. He loved hunting and fishing. He had good stories of his adventures and all the good, real food he ate along the way. Mike made sure the people around him were taken care of.
He was in his element outdoors. His love for animals and nature were obvious. He loved feeding the birds, watching lightening storms, and enjoying the views. He enjoyed his walks with his kids' dogs. He loved spending time at his Lake Louise cabin, (more like a house) which him and his sons somehow built in one month. That was his retreat where he loved his naps, snacks, cards, swimming and telling Dad jokes.
Mike was truly a good, honest man. He was a quiet and steady light in everyones life. You could always count on Mike to be there in the time of need.
Mike's sunset was on March 1, 2023. Maybe he's out snow machining with those who left before him. Time spent with him was a blessing. He is truly loved and missed.
Mike is survived by his children: Josi (Rickey) Starr, Thomas (Christina), Michael, Michele, and Anna (Cody); his grandchildren: Ulrich, Kennedy, Mierra, Felicia, Tiffany, Bryce, Ellis, Macey, Nolan and Corbin; Maria Langlie and the Carl Family. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Langlie, niece Kendra, and sister-in-law Margaret Langlie Goddu, nephews Mark and Dan Langlie, as well as several cousins. Mike was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Thomas Gordon Langlie.
The Langlie & Starr Family would like to thank the Bethel community and beyond, as well as the Lumber Yard family for all the love and support.
A 'Celebration of Life' will be held at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center in
Bethel, AK on March 30, 2023, time tbd. All are welcome! His wish was for his ashes to be spread near his cabin overlooking Lake Louise. This will take place in the late summer.
