COLUMBIA
Michael R Lareau, 80, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2025, following a recent diagnosis of lung cancer. A man of devotion, humor, and quiet mastery of life's pleasures, Mike left this world as he lived deeply loved and remembered.
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Florent Rene and Angela (Bonin) Lareau, Mike proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1968. During that time, he met his soulmate, Frances Joy, with whom he built a life rich in love and laughter in Columbia.
Mike is survived by his beloved son, Mark Lareau, and daughter-in-law, Michelle of Worcester, MA; his cherished granddaughter, Renee Delisle of Cromwell; his brother, Roland Lareau and wife, Linda of Westerly, RI; and brother-in-law, Peter Joy and partner, Rebecca Dresser of St. Louis. He also leaves behind treasured nieces, their spouses, and children.
Mike adored his family cheering at hockey games, hosting pool parties, wrapping the perfect gift, and telling stories that lit up every room.
He spent his career at The Hartford Insurance Company, retiring in 2005, where he formed close friendships over shared work and many rounds of golf.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Andy, Uncle Leo, sister-in-law, Laura, and beloved daughter, Michele Delisle. The passing of his wife, Fran in 2018 marked the deepest loss of his life. Their bond was unbreakable, and their favorite memories were made together under sunny skies on tropical islands always vying for the best tan.
A Renaissance man, Mike mastered everything from cooking the ultimate chicken parmigiana to crafting fine woodworking and cultivating a pristine lawn. His favorite place was by the pool with Fran, cigar in one hand, Manhattan in the other.
Mike served as a volunteer firefighter in Columbia for over a decade. He was deeply grateful for the care of local emergency personnel and the enduring friendship and support of neighbors, the Eberl family and Judy Smith.
