Michael J. Lyons

M.J. Lyons, age 68, of Hamlin, passed away Wednesday evening from injuries resulting from an ATV accident. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Karen Maxey Lyons. Born in Scranton on May 18, 1941, he is the son of the late Edward and Helen McIntyre Lyons. M.J. was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1959. He was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving during the Vietnam War. Prior to retirement, he had worked for General Dynamics. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, hunter and outdoors-man. He was very involved in the community with volunteer and civic activities. Proud of his Irish heritage, he was a member of the Division 6 Father Patrick Healey, Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also a member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Lake Ariel. M.J. was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather who will be dearly missed. He was also very fond of his little pal, Alvin. Also surviving are his children; his daughters, Karin Foster and husband Michael of Ottsville, Susan Cawley and husband Dave of Scranton, Ellen Lyons of Pittsburgh and Tierney Lyons of Scranton and his son, Matthew Lyons of Scranton, siblings; his sister, Ann Marie Gall and husband John of Clarks Summit and brother, Edward Lyons and wife Nancy of Scranton, grandchildren; Dylan Cawley, Lauren Brasted and William and Gilmore Cawley, and several nieces and nephews. He was also proceeded in death by an infant daughter, Jenet Ann. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Danville's Geisinger Medical Center, especially to Dr. Francisco Ferraz, the Critical Care Team and to the House of Care for all of their support and compassion. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Peter O'Rourke, Pastor. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Dunmore. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Sunday between 3-7:00PM at the funeral home.
