Michael Mamone Obituary

74, of St. Albans, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 23, 2025. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Mamone, his mother, Darlene Mamone, and his very special aunt, Bettie Pitcock.

A St. Albans High School alum, West Virginia State University graduate, and proud United States Marine, Mike is survived by his loving wife Shari Mamone, three sons Michael Mamone, David Mamone, and Jason (Jamie) Dunbar, two grandchildren Andrew Dunbar and Ava Dunbar, brothers James Mamone and Mark Mamone, and sister Linda Bordas.

After the Marine Corps and college, Mike went to work for the State of WV until beginning his career employment with Columbia Gas, where he retired after 30 years. During his retirement, Mike served on the St. Albans City Council and worked as a seasonal tax accountant with Martin and Ritz Accounting in St. Albans.

He was an active member of King's River Worship Center in St. Albans, and in the recent years of his life enjoyed returning to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the church of his youth.

Mike loved sports, both as a competitor and a fan, and pulled for the Yankees, the Giants, and WVU all his life. He played softball and basketball as long as his knees would allow and when those started to go, he kind of figured out how to play golf. Mike and Shari enjoyed being active and exercising together, forming many wonderful friendships at Universal gym in St. Albans and the Ayash Complex. Mike was also a dog lover. Not only did he spoil and love his own dogs, but he also carried dog treats with him at all times - just in case he met some dog somewhere. We are certain he is strolling the Streets of Gold now with a pocketful of dog biscuits.

But above all things, gardening was his lifelong passion. Beginning with a little backyard garden when he was a boy, Mike grew every manner of vegetable that could be grown in West Virginia soil. He turned the land surrounding his homes into celebrations of life and growth, building raised beds and composting piles and tilling the ground until it was fertile. His gardens spoke to his character.

He was tall and big and strong, but he was kind and compassionate and gentle. He was the last guy you wanted to fight for a rebound, but he was also the first guy to help a grandmother step down off the curb. He would watch a Mountaineer game with you on Saturday and then remember to pray for you on Sunday. His friends knew that he was one of their best and his family knew they could depend on him for anything.

When their family was young, Mike and Shari took their boys camping and fishing and on beach vacations. When their grandchildren were born Mike became forever known as "Grandaddy." He made silly faces, chased them up and down the hall, and invented a game called "No Hugs," wherein he warned them not to hug him which of course made them giggle and hug him extra.

He will be missed dearly and always remembered. A husband, a brother, a father, a Grandaddy, and a faithful friend to all.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 27, 2025, at King's River Worship Center, St. Albans with Pastor Chris Kimbro officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 am until service time.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV 25312 in Mike's memory.

Shari - What a wonderful obituary for a wonderful man. I'm sad for you and the neighborhood that lost an awesome neighbor. I do remember Mike as a kind man, who loved to garden and who always carried dog treats! May God bless you and your family during this time of loss.
