Michael Marriott, a visionary leader in the financial industry, a cherished mentor and a friend to many, died on April 17th at the age of 61. Mike leaves a legacy marked by innovation, resilience, and profound impact.
Mike attained great success over a 32-year fixed-income trading career, primarily in residential and commercial mortgage structured products. Most recently, Mike was principal and co-founder of Capra Ibex Advisors, where he applied his extensive skills and experience to help grow the firm into a significant player in the advisory and hedge fund spaces. Mike's defining role was as Co-head of the Structured Products Department at Credit Suisse, to which he was appointed in 2003. He brought stability and leadership to the Department and elevated it to among the top three on Wall Street. The pinnacle of his career was in the run up to the Financial Crisis, when he led the timely reduction of the Department's risks and enabled it to avoid the losses that led to the downfall of many of its competitors. He continued to adeptly navigate the Department throughout the Financial Crisis and put it in position to be the premier Structured Products Department for years to come. When he retired from Credit Suisse the entire trading floor rose to give Mike a standing ovation, a testament to the respect and influence he had earned within Credit Suisse and all that he had accomplished.
Beyond his professional life, Mike was dedicated to mentoring others, particularly evident in the hundreds of finance professionals who continued to rely upon his guidance and wisdom as well as the high school girls at Cathedral High School, where he ran an Algebra boot camp. Mike also served on the Board of the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College, as music was central to Mike's being and permeated every aspect of his life. His band, Aged Inventory, for which Mike played both trumpet and keyboard, performed in over 60 shows and raised over $2 million for more than a dozen charities. He firmly believed in the maxim "For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required." (Gospel of Luke, 12:48).
The son of Isabel and Vincent J. Marriott, Jr, Mike and his five siblings moved from their hometown of Chicago to Brussels, Belgium in 1978. Mike matriculated to Dartmouth College, graduating in 1984. Mike also earned an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business. Mike is survived by his wife and his three beautiful children.
Mike's remarkable career and personal endeavors underscore a legacy of leading by example, nurturing potential, and embracing every moment with zeal-a true embodiment of carpe diem in both his professional achievements and personal interactions.
