Michael Matzen Obituary

Published by Legacy from Sep. 9 to Sep. 19, 2025.
Born on April 8th, 1956, in Auburn, NY, Mike began his journey in up-state New York where most of his childhood would be spent. During his high school years, he re-located with his parents and siblings to Jacksonville, Fl. He built his life on the pillars of hard work, loyalty, integrity, and determination; virtues instilled in him from his father and mother. With this framework, he entered the construction field, and after attending UF and UNF, he graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration, returning to lead a successful career in construction management; eventually becoming Executive Vice President of a company in the very industry that he began as a laborer in.

In 1984, Mike married his soulmate, the love of his life, Regina Matzen. What started as a blind date, set up by mutual friends, began a union that would eventually be used by God as a powerful force to advance His Kingdom. Together, they raised two sons – Michael and Matthew Matzen, both a trial and a blessing, of which created a love at depths that they never knew existed.

Mike's passions were multi-faceted. From family, to animals, books, and football, he was never halfway in, rather always fully involved. He would often say "When Matzen men fall in love, they fall hard" and this was well evidenced by his affection for his wife Regina, and the pride he had with her at his side as they conquered the world together. He loved being a dad and always would be involved with the boys in activities such as trips to the springs or Royal Ambassadors. He had a soft heart for animals and would try to say no to a new addition, only to say yes shortly thereafter. He loved to read and was continually studying and learning. His passion for football was born from his love of the sport throughout his childhood. It was well known that he was a Florida Gator fan through and through. His true passion, however, was his Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

He received his call to ministry while attending First Baptist Church of Apopka. Upon receiving the call, he attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he graduated with a Masters of Divinity in 2001. In 2003, Mike and Regina accepted the call to serve as Senior Pastor at First Baptist Maitland, where they served for 18 years until his retirement in 2021.

He loved the simple life. Often finding solace in the mountains, watching the sunrise as he sat on the back porch of his brother's cabin, bible in hand, ready to spend time in The Word. Listening to Hymns and singing along with some of his favorite gospel music or watching old television programs from his youth was a source of happiness for him.

Nothing, however, brought him more joy than spending time with his grandbabies, earning the name pop-pop from the popping sounds he often made in attempt to make them laugh.

He is survived by his wife Regina Matzen and sons Mike Matzen (Breana) and Matthew Matzen (Tiffany); three grandchildren Mia, Annabelle, and Elijah; Brothers Russ Matzen (Barbara), Rob Matzen (Lisa), John Matzen (Shelly); Sisters Patti Conrad (Michael), Cheryl Miller (Alex), Laurie Aldridge (Joe)

He is preceded – and now reunited – in death by his father Robert Matzen and mother Betty Matzen.

Mike's impact on The Kingdom of God is evident in the lives of the many whom crossed his path. He loved teaching and had a passion for not only spreading the gospel but sowing into the lives God used him to reach. After retirement, he stayed active in the church, serving as a greeter at The First Baptist Church of Tangerine, and faithfully serving the homeless on the third Thursday of every month at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. He has fought the good fight. He has finished the race. He has been received into the loving arms of his Savior and King, who undoubtedly declared "well done, my good and faithful servant".
