Michael McCarthy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2001.
Trader With the Gift of Gab
Michael McCarthy, as he was known to his colleagues, was the tough, competitive trader, at 33 an assistant vice president at Carr Futures who worked from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., following the London exchanges.

But his family always called him Desmond. Desmond was the happy-go-lucky rugby player who liked a pint and a good tale to chase it. He was a big talker, speaking heatedly about history and politics, or dazzling them with his high-flying deals in Nice and Monaco. "He would try to explain what he did in the business world, but we never did catch on," his father, Bill McCarthy, said.

To his parents, first- and second-generation Irish immigrants, Desmond was the epitome of New World success. You could see Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty from his 27th-floor apartment in Battery Park City. When he worked in London, he thought nothing of flying home for the night for a family wedding, or to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Manhattan.

And though Desmond had been commitment-phobic, he seemed serious about the latest girlfriend he took home to Huntington, N.Y. "We were looking forward to watching Desmond move through life," his father said. "Now, every morning hurts. But we love talking about him. It's a way of honoring him."

But for the tragic day Mike was eyeing up the possibility of joining the FBI. I still remember the conversation which says something of Mike.

I will always remember Mike as a fearless and hardworking member of our wrestling team. His positive attitude and big smile made him a pleasure to coach. A life too short but one who will not be forgotten.

My prayers are with the McCarthy family today. Michael's favorite tie was with me all day today and I wear it every St, Patrick's Day, as he did by your letter to me, and his Holy card is taped to my windshield. While I lived in Chicago in 2001, I am now retired in Clarence, NY. As I watch the History Channel and I saw again the second tower go down, I pray for your peace in gratitude for you sharing a bit of Michael Desmond's life with me. God bless you all.

Every 9/11 I think of Michael. I am the mother of 4 boys who lived around the block from Michael and went to school with him. So so many days Michael would be in my garage lifting weights with my boys or punching the bag we had hanging from the ceiling. Michael and his brother Billy were two of my favorite boyfriends of my sons. They were always respectable, kind and caring. To this day I can't believe Michael is gone. He always had a smile and the earth lost a great young man while heaven received the greatest man. May God Bless the McCarthy's always and comfort them in their loss. With my love for all, Lynn McLain

Thinking of the McCarthy family today. Remember fondly working out with Michael and my brother Chris in the basement of Maurice Lane. Michael privately coached me in wrestling for the only Lu-Hi wrestler to win his match against Huntington. Such fond memories and your family is beautiful. God Bless you guys.

I never met you but feel I know you. I am your second cousin living in Australia. Your Grandmother and my mother were sisters. Their only surviving sister lives in Mayo and she told me about you. How sad we never met. You obviously had a big impact on all who knew you. One day we will meet PG until then rest in peace. X

Mike and I attended college at UB in Buffalo, NY. We were both English majors. I remember typing Mike's papers and discussing literature and his favorite book, The Catcher in the Rye. Coincidentally, his cousins lived right up the block from me in Emerson. Every time I pass their house, I think of you, Mike. You were a great person, and I will never forget you and your laughter. Your legacy lives on.

September 11, 2011

Mikey I can't believe its been 10 years and I still think of all the fun times we spent in the UK. Big guy, big heart and lots of laughs. In my thoughts and prayers always Px

Thinking of Mike and what might have been. Enjoyed the metals business but never realised the ambition to join the FBI. Enjoyed our times at Carr, London, time as a flatmate and spending the evening together the night before my marriage. Was it a good idea ! We were the same age, what you might have achieved ! A sad day though you enjoyed the time you had. Kind Regards Mark

Dez... Ten years have passed since you've left. Still... Your presence remains. You have made an indelible mark in the memories of so many. Your spirit is alive! The loss of you in 2001 and the loss of your cousin Gene the year prior, has to this day made me realize the importance of celebrating life. Thinking of you both, reminds me of that, everyday. You have touched so many, many people. I will never forget.
P.S. Thanks for the punch, you had a wicked left- hook!

I met Michael's father not that long after 9-11. His recollection of his last time with Michael, and that Michael's birthday was shortly before 9-11, has stayed with me all these years.

I keep Michael and the McCarthy family in my prayers. God be with them.

I can't believe it is 10 yrs. You are missed so much. You have such a wonderful family and they have great memories. It is so unfair and I pray for you and your family. I will always remember you with that great smile and always ready for a debate. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.

I never met Michael Desmond but I have one of his favorite neckties. I wear it every St. Patrick's Day and every Sept. 11th thanks to the good thoughts and wishes of Margaret and Bill. Next week Sunday, 9/11/2011, I will attend mass in his and the family's honor. I sometimes feel Michael's energy when times get a bit tough. It helps me realize how blessed I am. My son, Aaron was a chef at a restaurant on Penn Ave just six blocks from the White House on 9/11/2001. God bless the McCarthy family, friends and all who share a prayer for this great nation and the people who helped make and keep it so.

I WAS AT A MEMORIAL LAST NIGHT WITH TWO OTHER FRIENDS. EACH PERSON WAS GIVEN A FLAG, WITH A NAME ON IT. WE DID NOT RECEIVE ONE, SINCE WE WERE RUNNING A LITTLE LATE. A LADY IN BACK OF US GAVE US HER FLAG, SHE SAID SHE WAS ALLREADY PRAYING FOR SOMEONE FROM 9/11.SHE ASKED ALL OF US TO PRAY FOR THIS PERSON. THE FLAG HAS MICHAEL DESMOND MCCARTHY'S NAME ON IT. SO MICHAEL YOU NOW HAVE THREE ADDITIONAL PEOPLE THAT ARE PRAYING FOR YOU.

I HAVE READ THE ENTRIES IN THE GUEST BOOK, I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOU WERE LOVED BY SO MANY PEOPLE.

OUR PRAYERS WILL BE WITH YOU.

When I met you, Mike, I was going thru a rough patch.

Being with a warm, ever cheerful, supportive person

like you turned my life around. Whenever I was with you, I could not stop laughing. I started seeing things in a different sunny perspective. It's your big smile that lingers in my heart, Mike.

I remember Mike McCarthy as any other part of my childhood. He was a guy, a year ahead of me in school, who lived just around the corner from my house. And I`ll always remember that he was a great guy. Years after high school he always had a big smile and a sincere "how are you" whenever I met him. He will always be in my memories and prayers.

Michael had a great gift of bringing a smile to your face. Whether he was being serious or silly, it was difficult to keep a straight face around him.

Michael loved the Jets, and he especially loved Kyle Brady. He went to work in London during the start of the NFL season. Whenever Brady made a big play or got his picture in the papers, that Monday I would always email the pictures to Mike. He would call me and we'd share a good laugh.

When Bill Parcells returned to the Jets, and the Patriots came to town, Michael flew in and took me to the game. Shortly after, we lost touch. That was the last time I saw him.

Thank you for sharing your son Michael with us. In the short time I knew, him he made an impact on me that will last forever. He always made time for his friends, whether close or distant. He taught me the importance of friendship, and he taught me that you should never lose touch…and never forget your friends.

Michael will live in our hearts forever. And he still brings a smile to my face.

Mike,

I know you've got a great bunch of guys up there with you but you're so badly missed down here. You were one hell of a guy. Whether talking business or just shooting the breeze you were always interesting, funny, opinionated and smart.

I'll always remember our trip to Edinburgh to watch the rugby and you scrumming down with Buffy outside the pub after closing time!! Take Care Friend.

Thank you for sharing Desmond with the world and further honoring him by doing so. It is an honor to have read his story. May his life and love live on in all who love him. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Desmond. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Michael & I were friends in college. We were both English majors at the University of Buffalo, and he lived right around the corner from me (in the big white frat house). Michael was boisterous, passionate, effervescent and charming (he even managed to make our 18th Century lit class fun!), but he was also wise, warm, patient and profound. To know Michael was to love Michael. He was a wonderful guy -- truly one of a kind -- and I will never forget him. My heart goes out to his family, his friends and his loved ones.
