Michael Leroy McDonald

Michael Mike Leroy McDonald, 72, passed peacefully at Guthrie Corning Hospital around 7:00pm on May 29, 2025. He was surrounded by his family. He was born in Elmira, NY on January 4, 1953 to Robert Leroy McDonald and Ann Buddy McDonald. He was a resident of Elkland, PA and a parishioner of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Elkland.
Mike was an avid sportsman for many decades who enjoyed all things outdoors. Taught to hunt and fish by his Uncle Matthew Picky McDonald, he continued the tradition with his own children. He also loved to go camping, another tradition, whether it was at the Grand Canyon or the hike-in sites at Cowanesque Lake. He was a man of deep faith, one he passed on to his children, a faith that inspired him to help lead many religious retreats in and around Northwest PA where he lives for many years. Finally, he greatly encouraged his children in their pursuits, instilling in them a hard work ethic and a love for others while cheering for them in their successes and supporting them in their defeats.
He is preceded in death by his parents and multiple siblings: Robert M. McDonald, Pamela McDonald, Veronica Jo McDonald, Mary Molly McDonald, and Kevin McDonald (Gloria). He is survived by three sisters, Sharon McDonald, Valerie Cummings (Merle), and Denise Winant (Kevin). Along with them, lovingly known as Papi Mac and Grandpa Mike, he is survived by his former wife, Carole Lisa Schenberg (Doug) and their four children with their families: Jason Matthew McDonald (Autumn) and their daughters Natalie and Gracie; Megan Marie Rowe (Mike) and their son Lucas; Robert Michael McDonald (Meg); and Kristin Michelle von Hofen (David), with sons Dawson, Wesson, and Cayson, as well as daughters Viviana and Jeweliana. Among his surviving family are also included numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Arrangements for a small service have been made with the Phillips Funeral Home in Corning for Wednesday, June 4, 2024. Viewing hours will be from 2:30pm to 4::30pm, with a Memorial Service to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the American Cancer Society.
