Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMillan-Small Funeral Home & Crematory on Aug. 7, 2024.
It is with a heavy heart that the family of Michael John McQuaig announces his passing on August 1st, 2024 in
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at 70 years old. Michael was born on September 15, 1953 in Thibodeaux, LA to Neil and Estelle McQuaig. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Suzee McQuaig; his sister, Laura Badeaux; brother, Neil McQuaig Jr, with wife Katie McQuaig; daughter, Deidre Romines, with husband Michael Romines; step son, Johnny DeFrances, with wife Lindsay Rice DeFrances; and two grandchildren Gianna and Tyler. Michael is predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Lloyd "Chip" Badeaux.
Michael had a passion for music and a love for the guitar, his infatuation began at the young age of 12 when he joined his first band. Starting in 1971, he was not content to just study at LSU School of Music, but also attended Loyola University, to specifically learn to play the electric guitar. He started working with local bands while attending LSU, joining southern rock band Potliquor in 1974, touring the US with them and performing on their album released by Capitol Records in 1979. After the band's separation, Potliquor occasionally entertained audiences over the years including when they performed a show in 2013 during their induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
In 1984, Michael and Suzee were married when they moved to
Myrtle Beach, SC, where he spent the remainder of his life, playing music up and down the east coast and enjoying the beach life with his family. A lifelong student and educator, he was always learning new skills to improve his craft while teaching and sharing his passion with those around him. Michael's career spanned over 50 years and his professionalism never wavered. He continued practicing and playing the music he loved up until his passing.
Michael had a charm about him that drew you in, whether on or off stage. If you were blessed enough to see him perform you could feel his love, and when he laughed with that deep, gravely, "I've smoked a pack a day since I was 12" laugh, you knew you were part of his inner circle. The only thing he loved more than music was his wife, family and furry family- his German Shepherds. He will be greatly missed.
Although Michael cherished his life, friends, and colleagues in Myrtle Beach, he was permanently tied to, and had deep pride and love for his home state of Louisiana. He will be cremated and his ashes brought to Thibodeaux, LA for his final resting place. A private service in Myrtle Beach will be held at a future date to celebrate the life of this passionate, colorful, and lively person who touched the hearts and ears of so many.
