Michael Shane Melton, 48, of Sylva passed away unexpectedly on Friday July 12th. He was born on January 29, 1976 to Ronnie and Doris Greene Melton. He was formerly a mechanic at Jackson Paper in Sylva.
Michael loved spending time with his son, Tanner. He loved to hunt, fish, play pool, write poetry, and play video games. He loved dogs, cats, and all animals. He was an avid Duke basketball fan. Michael loved to help people and make people laugh. He would give you the shirt off his back and never ask for anything in return.
Michael served in the United States Army in Korea, receiving a good conduct medal.
In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by his son Tanner; Tanner's co-parent, Chastity Gates of Whittier; three sisters, Leslie Travis (John) of Melton, FL, Lora Kinsey (Eric) of Cashiers, and Dora Walker of Sylva. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and one aunt also survive.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday July 17th at 5:00 p.m. in the chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services with the Rev. Justin Hall officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 prior to the service.
The family would like to thank all First Responders, EMS, and Anthony Sequoyah.
