Michael Metcher Obituary

Michael James Metcher, a proud veteran and aviation enthusiast was born on Friday, October 19th, 1956. He passed away unexpectedly at St. Elizabeth's Hospital on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025.

Michael honorably served his country as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in both the United States Air Force and the United States Navy. Following his military service in Washington he continued his work in aviation, working for Boeing. Michael eventually brought his family back to his home state of Wisconsin, where he served in the Navy Reserve while contributing his expertise at K-C Aviation and Basler Turbo Conversions before retiring at Curwood Bemis. He took immense pride in his work, viewing it as a vital way to provide for his family. His commitment was evident in his exceptional reliability; he never missed a day of work and was frequently rewarded for his dedication and attendance.

To anyone who knew him, Michael's dry, witty sense of humor is something that will be remembered and missed most.

He had a lifelong passion for motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidson and Triumph. He cherished the time he spent going on trips with his sister Tina and brother-in-law Mark.

He was a beloved member of the community and looked forward to his daily routine as a member of the Oshkosh YMCA where he enjoyed strength training, swimming and chatting with the other members.

He cultivated a deep and lasting love for history, which was particularly focused on World War Il knowledge. His greatest passion, however, was airplanes. Growing up, his children learned to look up whenever a plane passed overhead; Michael would instantly identify it and often share a story about working on a similar model, ensuring his son and daughter were educated in the mechanics and history of flight.

Michael was a loving father. He taught his son, Nikolas, how to play baseball and was his unwavering supporter throughout all his sports endeavors. He always made sure to tell his children that he was proud of them, and that he loved them.

Later in life, Michael discovered the profound joy of being a grandfather. It truly brought him happiness. He lovingly taught his grandson, Jack, how to ride a bicycle and their shared bike rides to South Park became cherished memories. He had a special nickname for his granddaughter, June-bug, and loved spoiling her with Barbie dolls.

Michael's legacy is one of dedication-to his country, his work, and, above all, his family. His sharp wit, his passion for history, and his unconditional love will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Michael is survived by his children Erin Metcher, Nikolas Metcher and David Gendron, who he reconnected with later in life.

His grandchildren Jack Kohl and Juniper Metcher. His siblings Linda (Mike) Sommers, Nikki (Tom) Renard-Blixt, Tina (Mark) Ottone, and Phil (Julie) Metcher. He's also survived by friends, cousins, nieces and nephews, and is fondly remembered by his former wife and good friend Debbie Gendron.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Elaine Metcher of Appleton WI.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Church in Appleton (222 E Fremont St, Appleton). Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of Mass.
