A proud veteran of the United States Air Force for over two decades, Michael dedicated his life to his country with honor and integrity. He actively served in the Vietnam War receiving 2 Bronze Stars. After retiring from the military as a TSGT, he returned to his midwestern roots making homes in Wisconsin and North Dakota. He had a second career in management and ran his own computer business. Later in life, he found joy in driving special education children to school- a testament to his caring nature and commitment to making a difference.
Michael had an infectious zest for life. Whether it was indulging in old movies or sharing stories over drinks with family (even if it meant sleeping on the floor afterwards), he embraced every moment fully. He loved golfing, technology, collecting guns, and cooking. He was especially proud of his fried rice recipe and always welcomed people into the home to share a meal. That is, of course, if visitors could get past Michael's guard dogs that never left his side!
Road trips were another passion for Michael; he loved exploring new places and creating lasting memories with those he held dear. Shopping excursions often turned into delightful conversations filled with humor as he connected effortlessly with everyone around him.
Family was truly at the heart of Michael’s existence. He is survived by his devoted wife Cheryl; sons David (Jessi) and Daniel (Heidi); daughters Joanna (Donald), Candice (Christopher), and Laura (Russell), and nine cherished grandchildren: Tsyrus, Talen, Thelen, Camden, Chaz, Cailin, Roscoe, Audrey, Payton, and Oliver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Lorraine, and two sons, Mark and Lucas.
As we gather to celebrate this remarkable man’s life on January 10, 2025, with a Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m. and a visitation one hour prior at Askew Funeral Home in Cavalier, North Dakota, we will remember not just what he accomplished but how deeply he loved us all. His burial will take place on a later date at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. In lieu of flowers or gifts please consider donating to K9s for Warriors or the Gary Sinise Foundation or volunteering within your community to honor the memory of Michael Lee Neumann.
