Michael Anthony Ortiz, age 75, of Boise, Idaho, formerly of Barstow, California, and Costa Mesa, California, passed away peacefully, December 31, 2025. He was born on February 1, 1950, in San Bernardino, California, to Ruth Espinoza and Joe Ortiz.
Michael spent his early years in California before later residing in Nevada and ultimately settling in Idaho. He attended Catholic high school and went on to complete Army training then extensive Railroad training, preparing him for a lifelong career defined by dedication, discipline, and hard work.
He proudly worked as a locomotive engineer with Union Pacific Railroad, a role he held with great commitment and pride. His career reflected his strong work ethic and mechanical skill, traits that were evident in both his professional life and personal interests.
In his free time, Michael enjoyed playing chess and backgammon, glider airplanes, listening to music, and working with his hands, especially mechanical projects and fixing things. He had a curious mind and a playful sense of wonder, with special interests that included UFOs and aliens, game shows such as Jeopardy and Family Feud, NASCAR racing, Pixar films, and comedy.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Joe Ortiz; his mother, Ruth Espinoza-Ortiz; and his brother, Pelon Ortiz.
He is survived by his children, Matthew Ortiz and Courtney Pablik; his brother, Edward Ortiz; his best friend, Sandi Ortiz; and other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A graveside service will be held, 1:00 pm, January 15, 2026, at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd., Boise, Idaho.
Services are under the direction of Bowman Funeral Parlor, Garden City, Idaho.
