Michael Murphy Painter Jr.

Michael Murphy Painter, Jr. - lovingly known to many as "Junior," "June Bug," and a long list of colorful nicknames - teed off on his final round far too soon, passing away August 6th, 2025. A proud Ball State University graduate and lifelong lover of the game of golf, Michael's presence was as unforgettable as his short game.
He was equal parts charm and mischief, earning him the title of "America's most lovable pain in the butt" - though if you knew him, you knew there was no one more loyal, more loving, or more unforgettable. His sharp wit, quick smile, and larger-than-life personality made him the unofficial mayor of every room he entered.
Junior was rarely seen without his beloved dog, Pholee - his four-legged soulmate and constant companion. He found deep joy in long days on the green, spontaneous conversations, and the community of "Junior Heads" - a legion of friends and fans he collected over the years like trophies from countless Grateful Dead concerts, Purdue basketball games, and sun-soaked days on the lake. He also had a deep interest in history, which he lovingly shared with his nephew Gabriel, especially during the history bees Gabriel competed in.
He is survived by his cherished partner, Julie; loving father, Mike Sr., and stepmother, Patricia; his devoted brother, Matt, and sister-in-law, Sherry; his baby sister, Molly, and brother-in-law, Nate; his stepfather Wally and Stepbrother Brett and his beloved nieces and nephews: Maggie, Braydon, Wyatt, Isabella, Gabriel, Connor, Abby, Lillian, Eleanor, and Adeline. He was preceded in death by his adoring mother, Michele, whose memory remained a guiding presence in his life. He was also preceded by his stepfather, Clif, who is named "Cliffy Boy" and was a lifelong mentor to him. He will also be remembered fondly by the many people whose lives he touched with his laughter, honesty, and irreplaceable spirit.
In true Junior fashion, he left us with a wink, a joke, and a reminder that "Pop Bottle, Big Banana, I'm from Muncie, Indiana".
Calling Hours will be held on Monday, August 11 from 11am to 2 pm and a Memorial Service at 2 pm. Both will be held at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, Muncie.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking those interested to make a donation to the Herren Project in Junior's name (www.herrenproject.org).
