Michael Roy "Possum" Potetz, 74, of Raywood, Texas passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, in Moss Hill, Texas surrounded by his loving family.
Today, we gather to bid farewell to a man who lived life with the unbridled spirit of a wild cowboy. Michael Roy Potetz, better known as Possum, was born on September 17, 1949, in Liberty, Texas, to the late John Paul Potetz, Sr. and Marguerite Mills Potetz. He was a force of nature, leaving a trail of laughter, mischief, and unforgettable memories in his wake. Mike worked for Trico with 34 years of service. Although he loved Trico his true love was hauling and working cattle.
Possum was more than just a professional bull rider; he was a legend in the rodeo world, fearlessly taming the fiercest beasts with skill and determination. But beyond the arena, he was known for his mischievous antics, his rebellious streak, and his penchant for stirring the pot.
As an outlaw and agitator, Possum thrived on pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. His sharp wit and playful banter could light up any room, and his knack for mischief knew no bounds. He had a special talent for getting under John Brett's skin, making every Monday a memorable occasion for all involved.
Yet, for all his rough edges, Possum had a heart of gold. He lived life on his own terms, cherishing every moment and embracing every opportunity for adventure. His love for life was evident in his relationships, as he charmed multiple women with his charisma and magnetic personality until his last breath.
Even on his deathbed, Possum's spirit remained undimmed, as evidenced by the kiss he received from a married woman-a testament to his irresistible charm and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
Possum was a true friend, always willing to lend a hand and go the extra mile for anyone in need. His reputation as the best horse trader in town was well-earned, but his willingness to help others, no matter the task, was his most enduring legacy.
And though he may have been a tough cowboy on the outside, Possum had a softer side too. He cherished his friendships and would pout if he didn't receive his regular call to haul cattle. And he loved his family, children, but especially his grandchildren. As much as he loved them, he didn't spare any of them from his pranks.
In the end, Possum leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and larger-than-life adventures. He may have hauled his last load of cattle, but his spirit will continue to roam free, forever remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest easy, cowboy. Your legend lives on.
He is preceded in death by parents; and son, Houston Potetz.
He is survived by daughters, Ann Potetz of Sealy, Texas and Kindra Potetz Tousha and husband Greg of Moss Hill, Texas; son, Kirby Potetz of Devers, Texas; brothers, Louie Potetz and wife Susan of Woodville, Texas and Johnny Paul Potetz, Jr. and wife Donna of Liberty, Texas; sisters, Theresa Potetz of Crosby, Texas, Ruthie Potetz of Crosby, Texas and Kerry Dillard and husband Glyn of Liberty, Texas; and grandchildren, Lyndee Potetz (Jeff), Bradey Potetz, Payke Potetz, Cody Mauricio (Amber), Kursten Tousha (Lane), Kaden Vance, Georgia Vance, Logan Potetz (Brittany), Austin Potetz and Tripp Potetz. The family would like to send a special thank you to his granddaughter, Lyndee and her mother Tammie for the extra love, guidance, and support during his last days.
