Michael C. Rizzo, 67, of Mahopac, NY, passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2025. He was born on June 25, 1958, in Yonkers, NY, to the late Dino and Lucille (Zangari) Rizzo. Michael grew up in the Bronx where he met Debra Fiore and they were married on March 20, 1994.
A proud graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in 1978, Michael was passionate about both the art and heart of cooking. He went on to inspire countless young chefs as a Fellow of the CIA, as well as through his work as a guest lecturer. His love for food was matched only by his dedication to hospitality, which was evident throughout his distinguished career.
In 1993, Michael became the Executive Chef of The Cornell Club in Manhattan, where he remained for over three decades until his retirement in 2024. During his tenure, he became a cherished figure at the Club, known for his exceptional culinary talent, memorable private events, and signature program dinners. His personal touch and commitment to excellence endeared him to members and visiting alumni alike. Michael's leadership in the kitchen, paired with his warm and welcoming presence in the dining room, left an indelible mark on the Club and all who had the privilege of working with him.
Before joining The Cornell Club, Michael honed his craft at some of New York's most renowned establishments, including the Waldorf Astoria, Helmsley Palace Hotel, World Yacht Cruise Lines, Maxwell's Plum, and One if by Land, Two if by Sea.
Outside of his professional life, Michael had a deep love for gardening. He took great pride in growing his own vegetables and was especially known for canning his homemade tomato sauce, caponata, and pickled eggplant, a reflection of his commitment to quality, simplicity, and the joy of nurturing life in all its forms.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Debra, his sister Susan Chupp and her husband James, nieces Vanessa and Christina Fiore, nephews Michael and Steven Fiore, and his aunt Rosanne Keane and her husband Robert.
Visiting will be held on Sunday, November 16th from 12- 4PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 17th at 10AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, also in Mahopac; private cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Michael's name to The Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude’s Childen's Research Hospital.
