It is with profound sadness and full hearts that the family of Michael Lee Roberts announces his peaceful passing on February 27, 2026, at The Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa. He was 76 years old. Michael lived a life defined by service, compassion, and an unshakable love for the people around him - a life that touched far more souls than he ever knew.

A Life of Service and Courage

Born on May 3, 1949, in Peoria, Illinois, Michael built a career as a New York City Paramedic, dedicating himself to caring for the most vulnerable - newborns, the elderly, and all those in need. His empathy was not simply a professional quality; it was the very fabric of who he was.

On September 11, 2001, Michael answered the call that would change the world. As a first responder at Ground Zero, he rushed toward the unimaginable, giving everything he had in the midst of catastrophe. That day cost him dearly - he lost members of his beloved crew and his ambulance in the chaos and devastation. Yet Michael carried that weight with quiet dignity, honoring his fallen colleagues through a lifetime of continued service and kindness. Decades later, the toxins he breathed in at Ground Zero would take their final toll. Michael's passing was ultimately caused by World Trade Center cough, a lasting and devastating consequence of his selfless response on that terrible day. He gave his health - and ultimately his life - in service to others.

Music, Family, and Simple Joys

Beyond his heroism, Michael was a man who found deep joy in music. He played the drums, guitar, and bass, and there was perhaps no greater happiness for him than watching his son and grandson share that same love of music. He beamed with pride every time they performed.

In his later years, Michael made the heartfelt decision to move to Iowa to be close to his grandsons - a testament to how deeply family anchored him. His grandsons were a constant source of love and light in his life. He was equally tender-hearted with animals, extending to them the same warmth and care he gave to every person he met.

Survived By

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Georgene Roberts; his children, Bonnie Crosby (Roberts), Christopher Roberts, and Timothy Roberts; his son-in-law, Patrick Crosby; and his cherished grandsons, Christian Roberts, Noah Roberts, and Michael Crosby. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Joyce, and his beloved mother- and father-in-law.
