Kelly Cremation & Funeral Care - WorcesterWORCESTER/SOUTHBRIDGE - Michael W. Skrzek (Mike), age 75, passed away on February 22, 2026 after a short period of declining health.
Michael was born in Heilbronn-Sontheim, Germany, temporarily settling there with his Polish parents after WWII. Together with his parents and his older sister, Mary, they emigrated to Worcester in 1951. After high school, Mike answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1969 - 1972, which included two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. After his discharge from the military, he held various jobs, before, sadly, losing his legs to complications from Agent Orange. In spite of being confined to a wheelchair, he never let his disability define him or limit him. Mike had a zest for life and lived independently, driving his specially-equipped car, enjoying taking long drives in the countryside, fishing - always ready to cast a line into any lake that he passed along the way, and even attempting water skiing with a program for the disabled in Spencer. He found peace in nature and took great pleasure in watching the birds that flocked to his bird feeder. He was known for his sense of humor always quick with a joke.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Jozef and Olga (Byrdy) Skrzek. He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Mary Liberis and her husband Tom of West Boylston, brother, Peter Skrzek and his wife Sandra of Worcester, sisters, Sophie Skrzek of Worcester, and Christine Hamilton and her husband Bill of Londonderry, NH, several cherished nieces and nephews, and family members in Poland.
His family is exceptionally thankful for the kindness and support of his neighbors in Southbridge, MA during the past few years.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 7th from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM, with military honors at 4:30 PM at Kelly Cremation and Funeral Care, 154 Lincoln Street in Worcester. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden Street, Worcester, MA 01606. https://worcesterarl.org/donate/
