Michael Smith Obituary

Michael Smith
11/22/1945 - 11/07/2025
Michael Andrew Smith, age 79, fell asleep in the Lord after a brief illness, November 7th, 2025, in San Francisco.
A graduate of St Monica grammar school, Saint Ignatius College Preparatory and San Francisco State University, Mike was an Able-Bodied Seaman and a member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific until his passing.
He was a lover of books and Foster's ale, an encyclopedia of historical knowledge, a singer of songs Irish and otherwise, a violinist of sorts, and the Unofficial Mayor of Kelly's Cove. His passion for local archeology led him to dig up large swaths of San Francisco for decades.
He is survived by his son Luke, daughter-in-law Azalea, grandchildren Dakota, Lily and Memphis, siblings Kevin (Ana,) Theresa, Martin (Diane,) Patrick and Dennis, nephews Andrew, Daniel, Zachary, James, Jacob, and nieces Melissa, Amy, and Hannah. He was predeceased by his mother Agnes, father Roy, and brothers Daniel and Brian (Lisa). Mike mourned many lost friends in his lifetime and left behind many more.
Donations to St Monica's grammar school are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Mike was a dedicated Presidio Archaeology Lab volunteer. He would do anything we asked, including spending at least three volunteer shifts putting one vexing artifact back together. In the end the artifact was still a mystery but his sense of humor was intact. He and his good buddy Joyce would even pull up chairs and spend afternoons in the field with us, just keeping us and each company as we dug on El Presidio. Our Colma subsoil was a particular passion of his. He was always looking to learn something and had such great stories to share. We miss him here at the archaeology lab.

Michael was a proud Dad and Grampa. He loved volunteering at the archaeology labs at GGNRA and the Presidio. Also on the Jeremiah O'Brien as part of the crew participating in the 50th anniversary of D Day. On occasion he was at the wheel for many of the SF bay cruises. He was a constant presence for Kelly Cove sunsets and the thrill of a green flash. Hail and Farewell to a most interesting man with lots of colorful sea stories.
I miss him every day.

Mike was a good man, who always seemed to be running (much of that literally) in several different directions. He loved to speak of his family, especially his son, "Lukie", and would often say, he was made "shop steward" of terminal assistants at GGF, because he had a pen in pocket, so they knew he could write. :)

Mike was a good friend, a neighbor and a classmate. He always put a smile on my face. I´ll miss our lunches at Bill´s Place. Prayers and love to the Smith family. Tony Ribera

I looked for Mike at Stairway 4 at Ocean Beach near Balboa. He would be there at sundown, reading a book, making notations on the sea wall of where the sun set, and drinking a Foster's through a straw. But I had not seen him for a few months. He used to tell me about his travel adventures in Ireland and his local adventures in San Francisco. He was a historian. We shared a common interest in Italian history. He was a fun and interesting guy!

Mike, sorry to see you go. We had a good visit the December before last at the union Christmas party. Although I was in your parents' home many times when I was young, shipping with you during Desert Storm you were a great shipmate during a difficult voyage. "May you have Fair Winds and Following Seas" in this next voyage. Vince O'
