Michael Stodgel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Merle Hay Funeral Home on Mar. 13, 2026.
Michael William Stodgel, 79, is now resting with the Lord and is reunited with his loved ones in Heaven. Mike was born in Des Moines, Iowa on February 18 th, 1946, to Thea and William Stodgel and passed away on July 23 rd, 2025. He lived in Colorado and Wyoming as a young child but returned to Des Moines after his father was killed in a hunting accident. Mike, his mother and siblings grew up very close and Mike was fiercely protective of his family, especially his mother.

Mike became well versed in all aspects of the construction industry and did everything from concrete, framing, plumbing, electrical, roofing and finish work. He was also a skilled mechanic, keeping family and friends' vehicles on the road over the years.

Mike enjoyed watching NASCAR, and all the oldies especially Star Trek and MASH. He especially liked bickering with his sister, Edith.

The hardest part for our family has been as his health failed, we were unable to call Mike, he was always willing to help us with any building project or repairs, fix our cars, give us a ride, or just tell us how to get something done. We are grateful to Chad, Raelynn, Rilee and Chase for their dedication to him and the care they provided as he declined.

Mike is survived by his daughter Kimberly Ann Stodgel, who he was so very proud of, grandchildren Chad (Raelynn) Seiberling, Ceijay Johnson, Casey Johnson and Cody (Miranda) Johnson, sister Edith Manley, brother John (Debbie) Stodgel, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who just adored their Uncle Mike.

Mike was preceded in death by his father William Michael Stodgel, his mother Thea Louise (Askland) Stodgel, brother Albert Stodgel, infant sisters Karen Stodgel and Sandra Stodgel, Aunt Edith Cebuhar, Uncle John Cebuhar, grandparents Hulda and Lars Askland and Albert and Nettie Stodgel.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 1 st from 10AM to 12PM at Merle Hay Funeral Home (4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, IA 50310). A Celebration of Life will follow the visitation starting at 12PM.
