Michael Francis Sustendal

Michael Francis Sustendal came into the world with a passion

for creativity, an eye for beauty and a strong sense of justice.

An early art competition won him city wide recognition for his

artistic efforts at only seven years of age.

By 15 he had discovered photography. His keen eye was developed further

while serving in Vietnam with the US Navy. He trained in

aerial photography as well as the use of small to large format

cameras. After completing his military service, Michael

traveled extensively around the United States and Europe

taking photographs for high profile clients and companies

including Time-Life, Condé Nast, The Wilderness Society, The

National Trust for Historic Preservation, Lykes Brothers

Steamship Company and others.

In addition to photography, Michael became a skilled painter

and eventually a sculptor and clay artist. His affiliation with

Regan Carney and The Clay Co-Op in Bay St. Louis brought

him great joy and enduring friendships. He helped behind the

scenes wherever he could. He showed up for people in there

times of need as well as times of celebration. Friendship

might have been his strongest artistic medium.

In addition to his beloved wife Catherine Lasperches, Michael

is survived by his sister, Diane Sustendal Labouisse of New

Orleans, his brother C. Don (Gerry) Sustendal of Madisonville,

LA and a host of nieces and nephews.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. George F.

and Mary Sue Sustendal, sister Sue Sustendal, and brother

George Sustendal.
