Michael D. Thompson, 75, of Rockford, passed away Monday, January 12, 2026. Born January 24, 1950, in
San Antonio, TX, the son of John C. and Jesse Lee (Jones) Thompson. Michael married Loretta Burgess on September 29, 1967 in
Plainfield, IN. He graduated Waterman (IL) High School in 1968. Michael worked for Colonial Bakery and owned The County School Family Restaurant in Rochelle. He attended Riverside Community Church and was a member of Open Door Baptist Church in Alabama. Michael loved to play guitar when he was younger and had a deep appreciation for good music. He was a hardworking provider and protector of his family always looking out for them. He loved his wife and the Lord deeply. Michael enjoyed people and had a great ability to foster and develop relationships. He began a hobby with leather that turned into a small business Lone Star Leather Works. The whole family feels this devastating loss, especially of Grampe and will miss him immensely.
Michael is survived by his wife, Loretta; children, Jennifer (Ken) Stodola, Michael (Missy) Thompson, Jr., Debbie (Kevin) Pike, Shelley Thompson, and Joe Thompson; grandchildren, Alysson (Josiah) Sandahl, Kaleb Stodola, Tasa (Scott) Diehl, Danielle Thompson, Mikaela Thompson, Cameron Davis, Payton Davis, Ashley, Rachel, Jake, and Ethan Pike, Abigayle, JoLynn, and Jordan Thompson; many great grandchildren; father-in-law, George "Ed" Burgess; sisters-in-law, Mary Thompson; sister-in-law, Teresa Shriver; niece and nephew, Daniel (Mexi) Shriver, and Suzie Shriver; and great nieces and nephew. Michael was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Sharon, Janet, and Debbie; and brother, Johnny.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am. on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at Riverside Community Church, 6816 North 2nd Street,
Machesney Park, IL 61115. The family will be available at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service for anyone who wants to offer their condolences.
