Michael Wingate Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 26, 2024.
Michael Thomas Wingate, Sr., beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, coach, and fraternity brother passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024. Born on January 17, 1947, to the late Horace and Ocelia Wingate. Michael, affectionately known as "Mike", "Coach Mike", and "Gate", was the sixth of eight children and was dearly loved by all those that knew him. Mike's life was a testament to his enduring spirit, his commitment to his community, and his unwavering support for his family.
He was predeceased by his siblings Jeanette Wingate Johnson (Harold), Horatio Sr. (Beryl), Cornelius, Milton Sr., Sylvia Wingate Marshall (William), and Gerald Wingate. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Cynthia Smith Wingate, his loving sons, Michael Thomas Wingate Jr. and Kevin Anthony Wingate, his dear sister Evelyn Wingate Stanley, sister in-law, Jeanette Marie Wingate, and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and warmth.
A proud graduate of St. Augustine in 1967 and Dillard University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Mike's professional journey was marked by his meticulous attention to detail and his ethical approach to his work. His career began at Ernst & Ernst Public Accounting Firm as an Auditor from 1971 to 1974. He then contributed his expertise to Avondale Industries Inc. as a Cost Accountant and in Cost Schedule Control from 1975 to 1991. From 1991 to 1996, he served the community at H&R Block as a Tax Preparer before he transitioned to a fulfilling retirement where he continued to prepare tax returns and perform write-up work.
Mike's commitment to service was further exemplified through his lifelong dedication to the fraternity OMEGA PSI PHI, where he was a Life Member #708. Initiated on December 13, 1968, at the Theta Sigma Chapter, he was honored with multiple service awards, including a 50-year Service Award in 2018, the Meritorious Officer Service Award in 2016, and the prestigious Founders' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
In addition to his professional and fraternal endeavors, Mike was a respected member of the National Association of Black Accountants and Pines Village Homeowner's Association. From 1976 to 2005, he volunteered as a Youth Coach and Supervisor at Fred Digby Playground, where his mentorship influenced countless young lives.
Mike's interests were as diverse as his talents. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching all sports, especially the Olympic Games, and enjoyed participating in track and field events, golf, baseball, and tennis. His intellectual pursuits included a deep love for history and the patience and focus required to complete jigsaw puzzles.
As we reflect on the life of Michael Thomas Wingate, we are reminded of the profound impact one individual can have on so many lives. His unwavering integrity, kindness, and dedication to service will continue to inspire those who knew him. Though he may have left us in body, his spirit, and the lessons he imparted will forever be a guiding light for his family, friends, and the countless individuals he mentored and supported throughout his remarkable life.
Mike's journey through life was one of purpose, love, and immense contribution. As we bid him farewell, we do so with a sense of gratitude for the time we shared with him and the legacy he leaves behind. Michael Thomas Wingate will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire and guide us all. Rest in peace, Coach Mike. Your game was well played.
