Michelle Cernuska Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by The Original Rago Brothers Funeral Home - Northwest Location -Norridge Chap on Jan. 2, 2026.
Michelle L. Cernuska (née Szymell), 57, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away peacefully at her home on December 29, 2025, surrounded by love. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and deep devotion to her family and friends.

Michelle was born in 1968 in Chicago, Illinois, to Donald and Barbara Szymell. She graduated from Ridgewood High School in Norridge, Illinois, in 1986 and attended Triton College. Throughout her life, Michelle worked in administrative and accounting roles. She was also a business owner and later enjoyed being home to mentor and raise her brilliant son Jonathan.

In 1996, Michelle married John Cernuska. In 2004, they moved to Cape Coral, Florida, where they built their home and life together. Michelle was preceded in death by her beloved son, Christopher Cernuska; her father, Donald Szymell; her brother, David Szymell; and her father-in-law, John Cernuska.

She is survived by her loving husband, John Cernuska; her ambitious son, Jonathan Cernuska; her mother, Barbara Szymell, of Cape Coral, Florida; her mother-in-law, Fran Cernuska; her nieces, Lauren (Elvis) and Damiana; and her nephews, Daniel, Anthony, and Joseph, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Michelle was known first and foremost for her heart. She was generous, kind, and loving in a way that made people feel truly seen and cared for. She had a sharp wit and a wonderful gift for creating funny little sayings that perfectly fit any situation, often bringing laughter and comfort to those around her. She could also be wonderfully stubborn, a trait her family remembers with affection and admiration.

To her nieces and nephews, Michelle was lovingly known as "Auntie Moo Moo," a name that reflected the warmth, joy, and special bond she shared with them. She had a fondness for cows, a deep love of the beach, and a special appreciation for life's simple pleasures. At Christmastime, her treasured ornaments and snowman decorations filled her home with cheer and reflected her playful spirit. Michelle adored her pets and treated them as family, just as she did the people she loved.

Above all, Michelle treasured time with her son, Jonathan. Their moments together-especially their side trips to Dunkin' Donuts and Chick-fil-A-were among her greatest joys and will forever be held close in the hearts of those who knew how deeply she loved him.

Michelle's presence brought comfort, light, and laughter. She will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her fierce love, and the way she made life a little brighter simply by being herself. Though she is deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the stories shared, the smiles she inspired, and the love she gave so freely.
