Michael "Mike" Dale Johnston, 71, of Grayson, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at UK King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, surrounded by his loving family.
Born July 31, 1954, in
Ashland, Kentucky, Mike was the son of the late Edward "Ed" and Flora Bell Hay Johnston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Candace Leann "Candy" Johnston Wiler; his father- and mother-in-law, Robert E. Bowling, Sr. and Deanna Kay McDavid Bowling; and his brother-in-law, Robert "Bobby" Bowling, Jr.
Mike attended school in Hitchins and was a proud Tiger through the 11th grade. He was a proud member of the first graduating class of East Carter High School in 1972. A standout athlete, he was honored as the first recipient of the Raider of the Year award in basketball - a distinction that reflected both his talent and his leadership.
Mike's strong work ethic was evident from an early age. His first job was at the brick yard in Hitchins, General Refractories. He later worked for Betsy Ross Bakery, Ruth Bros., Little Sandy Coal, Shaker Coal, and a co-owner of Ridgetop Mining. A devoted public servant, Mike faithfully served as Carter County Clerk beginning in 2006 and was completing his 20th year in office. His dedication to the people of Carter County earned him deep respect throughout the community.
A man of strong faith, Mike was an active member of Stinson Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder. His life was a testament to servant leadership - whether in the church, at the courthouse, or in his hometown of Hitchins, where he was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Hitchins." In 1997, he became the owner and operator of Hitchins Post and later the Bluegrass Express Mart in Olive Hill. Most recently, he had the honor of serving as emcee of the Hitchins Christmas Parade, a role that perfectly reflected his love for his community.
Mike gave generously of his time as a youth basketball coach with Upward, the Prichard Basketball League, and Carter Christian Academy. He was a devoted Kentucky Wildcat and Cincinnati Reds fan, an avid lover of bluegrass music, and a well-known prankster whose humor brightened countless lives. Yet above all, Mike's greatest joy was his family - especially watching his grandchildren compete in sports. He never missed an opportunity to cheer them on, always their biggest supporter.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Debbie Ann Bowling Johnston, whom he married on May 26, 1973. Their enduring love was the foundation of a beautiful family legacy. He is also survived by his daughter, Lisa (Rodney) Adams of Grayson; five grandchildren, Chandler (Morgan) Adams, Caden (Addey) Adams, Cason Adams, Kirstin (Justin) Fannin, and Bradley Wiler; one great-grandchild, Easton Wiler; and a great-grandson on the way, Davis Chandler Adams.
He is further survived by his sister, Koneta (Tim) Littleton of Grayson; his sister-in-law Teresa (Pat) Stamper, Debra Bowling, and his youngest sister-in-law whom he lovingly called his "oldest girl," Crystal (Johnnie Dickerson) Limings and her children: Kaylee (Austin) Archey and their son, Abram Archey, Gabe Limings, and Lafe Limings that he considered as his own grandchildren. A niece and nephews - Andrea Hackworth, Robbie Stewart, Stephen Holbrook; and a host of extended family members and dear friends who mourn his passing and celebrate his life.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, 2026, at the First Church of Christ in Grayson with Bro. Michael Burnett and Bro. Keith Sergent officiating. Burial will follow at East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday and after 9:00 a.m. Friday until the service hour all at the church.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Chandler Adams, Caden Adams, Cason Adams, Easton Wiler, Robbie Stewart, Stephen Holbrook, Gabe Limings, and Lafe Limings.
Mike's life was marked by faith, family, laughter, and service. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and unwavering devotion to his community. Though he will be deeply missed, the impact he made on those who knew him will continue to be felt for generations to come.
