Mildred Cottrell Obituary

Mildred Currin Cottrell, 94, of Lake Park, Florida, passed away on December 20, 2025. She was born on October 19, 1931, in Oxford, NC, to the late Herman William Currin and Lucy Pearl Currin. She grew up with two wonderful brothers: Austin Purefoy Currin, Sr. and Vernon William Currin. Raised on a tobacco farm, she was a proud native of Granville County. After graduating from Oxford High School and attending Oxford Business School, her life was forever changed upon meeting the love of her life, Lennie Thomas Cottrell. They married on September 1, 1950. Their life led them to Palm Beach County in 1956 where Lennie served as Chief of Police of Riviera Beach, Interim Town Manager, and City Commissioner of the Town of Lake Park. Their 67 years of marriage was blessed with three daughters that they adored. Mildred always worked hard to prepare a home filled with love and support for her family. In her exceptional life she worked tirelessly for her community. She drove a school bus, served many roles in her church family faithfully, became P.T.A. president, and always had an open door to all. She had a love for people of all ages demonstrated by her forty years of teaching Sunday School while serving in her leadership role for Super Seniors in her home church. She was beloved by many for her loving heart and outreach to others by her phone ministry and letter writing. The monthly Super Senior programs were a highlight for many. She loved the piano and her home was always filled with music. She shared her music gift in her church ministry. She excelled in her roles with Lennie in their community. She and Lennie owned and operated Cottrell Realty after Lennie's retirement from the police department. She enjoyed traveling with Lennie to Mexico, Israel, Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, and Nova Scotia as well as the time spent in their home in Oxford annually. She never forgot her North Carolina family where she is lovingly known as Aunt Rose. She is survived by her daughters Cynthia Blevens (Hudson), Lucy Dwyer (Ken), and Leigh Cottrell, grandchildren Thomas, Megan, and Madelyn (Keeth), nieces, nephews, and many great-nieces and great nephews. She was devoted to her family, her friends, her faith, and her community. She lived a long and rich life surrounded by those who loved and cared for her. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, December 30,2025 at Gentry - Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home at 11:00am, 503 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
