Mildred Jane (Nye) Fair, 100, of Hershey, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Sunday, November 30, at Columbia Cottage, Palmyra. She was born on January 24, 1925 to the late Ralph Allen and Sara Rebecca (Wolfersberger) Nye. She was predeceased by her loving husband, of 70 years Richard Nelson Fair.
She began her working years as a bookkeeper for a local bank and later assisted her father with the paperwork for his business. Her career continued at the Hershey Department Store and later at the Hershey Drug Store and the Hershey National Bank. It was there that she became something of a local legend; as the teller on duty during a bank robbery, her calm and composed response is still remembered and admired by all who recall that day. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing piano, doing crossword puzzles, bird watching, fishing at the shore, enjoying nature, and traveling. She also would enjoy surf fishing in Delaware with her family during the Spring and Fall time.
Her faith was the steady foundation of her life. She enjoyed playing the organ at her church, Sherk’s Church, Annville. She carried her belief with devotion, allowing it to guide her actions, her compassion, and the way she treated others. That strong spiritual grounding shaped her into the woman so many came to rely on.
Above all, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her son, Jeff Fair; grandchildren, Ian and Carrie Fair and husband Paul Durfee; and great grandchildren, Puckerman, Ryatt, and Brecken Durfee. She is predeceased by her siblings, Blanche Kinch and Robert Fair.
Burial will be private at the Hershey Cemetery, Hershey.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in her memory to her church, Sherk’s Church, 73 Sherk’s Church Rd., Annville, PA 17003.
