Rougemont, North Carolina - Mildred Carolyn Smith, 87, of Rougemont, died on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at Duke University Medical Center. Born in Durham, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Warren Smith and Verda Jeffries Smith. Mildred graduated valedictorian from Helena High School in Timberlake, NC. In 2000, she retired from Central Carolina Bank in Durham after 44 years of service. Mildred was a long time member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church in Rougemont. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Thomas Smith, and her sister, Sandra Smith Martin.
She is survived by three nieces, Lisa Smith and Lara Smith Garrett, both of Rougemont, and Karen Pontier (Jay) of Apex; her sister-in-law, Darleen Smith; and six great-nieces/nephews, Elisabeth and Victoria Godwin, Payne and Davis Garrett, Joey and Anna Pontier.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the Brooks & White Chapel. Burial will follow at the Mount Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service (1-2 PM).
Pallbearers will be Payne Garrett, Davis Garrett, Bobby Davis, Chad Davis, Darron Davis, and Tyler Bunch. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Smith and William Crabtree.
Memorials may be made Mount Harmony Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
Her family wishes to thank the caregivers who helped her in recent years especially Bridgett Long and Linda Simpson.
