Minori Shimada Smith, of Livingston, MT died at her home, surrounded by her husband and friends on March 10, 2026. She was 60 years old.
Minori was born on October 22, 1965, in Toyama, Japan to Akio and Chie Shimada. After graduating from high school Minori attended Toyama University where she received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. After graduation she taught middle school Home Economics in her home town of Toyama. During her teaching career she enjoyed traveling the world and traveled to such places as London, Paris, Hong Kong, Calgary and Montana. Minori came to Montana pursuing her passion for flyfishing. It was on one of her trips to Montana that she met fellow flyfishing fanatic Rick Smith and after a short courtship they were married on December 3, 2004. During their marriage they travelled and fished throughout the United States, Canada, England and Japan. Minori spent the past twenty years working tirelessly in the flyfishing industry. An industry she truly loved.
Minori passed away peacefully in her home after a year long struggle with cancer. She faced cancer with incredible courage and compassion. Although she is gone her spirit, smile and legacy will live forever.
Minori is survived by her husband, Richard Smith of Livingston, MT; her stepson Peter Smith of Phoenix, AZ; her parents Akio and Chie Shimada of Toyama, Japan; and her sister Mari Shimada of Toyama, Japan.
Minori was cremated at Franzen-Davis Funeral Home. Flowers and condolences can be sent to 209 West Park Street, Livingston, MT 59047.
