Miriam Frenke, SCN, 89 (formerly Sister Arthur Miriam) was born in Louisville, Kentucky, on Sept. 4, 1933, and given the name Yvonne. She was the youngest of four. She died on Nov. 16, 2022, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a professed Sister of Charity of Nazareth for 67 years.
Sister Miriam's first ministry was teaching sixth grade at St. Anne's in Memphis, Tennessee.
Sister Miriam spent most of her ministries in health care and health care education, totaling 45 years in the profession. She completed nurses' training at St. Joseph's Infirmary in Louisville, then earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Nazareth College in Louisville and later her master's degree in nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She became a certified nurse practitioner in 1985.
From 1959-1969 she served in psychiatric nursing at Our Lady of Peace in Louisville. She served in a similar ministry at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock, Arkansas.
She spent 20 years as part of the faculty at Spalding University, instructing and training nursing students. She worked in family practice at the University of Louisville. She later served persons living with HIV/AIDS as an outreach nurse educator and pastoral care coordinator at the House of Ruth and Nazareth Home from 1997-2012.
Sister Miriam served her SCN Community in administration as associate regional for the Louisville area from 1991-1996.
She is survived by her extended family and her religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth.
Sister's visitation will be Sunday, November 20th at 4 p.m. followed by the Wake service at 6:30 p.m. in St. Vincent dePaul Church, Nazareth. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Vincent's on Monday, the 21st at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery. The service will be webcast at https://nazareth.org/live.
