Mitchell Lewis Appelrouth
January 26, 1935 - October 31, 2025
Mitchell Lewis Appelrouth of Henrico County, Va., beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away, Friday, October 31, 2025 at the age of 90.
Mr. Appelrouth was born in Key West, Fla., in 1935. He graduated Key West High School in 1952 and the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla., in 1956 with a degree in Marketing and Business Administration. He was awarded the Military Student designation as a four-year Army ROTC graduate and as a member of the Army Scabbard and Blade Honor Society. After graduating college, he served in the US Army at Fort Lee, Va., as an active-duty Training Officer for two years and then as an Army Reserve for three years, attaining the rank of Captain. He was responsible for training newly commissioned officers called to active duty.
He moved to Richmond in 1959 and soon began his 40-year career as a residential real estate broker. In 1982, he was named Realtor of the Year by the Virginia Board of Realtors.
After retiring as broker, Mitchell taught real estate classes for 20 years and, in 2003, was named Richmond Educator of the Year. He was recognized by the National Association of Realtors as a Realtor Emeritus after 40 years of membership.
Mr. Appelrouth was a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy in Richmond and the Henrico Police Citizens Academy. Mitchell also was a licensed mediator in the State of Virginia. He loved sports and participated in tennis, racquetball, and softball over the years.
Mitchell had a wonderful time maintaining old friendships. He attended many Key West High School reunions and would like to thank four of his 1952 Key West High School classmates who remained in close contact with each other over the years: Hoke Holcomb, Armando (Bookie) Henriquez, Esther Taylor, and Donnie Carbonell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Isidore Appelrouth and Jennie Weintraub Appelrouth; brothers, William Appelrouth, Robert Appelrouth, and Daniel Appelrouth, and son, Ivan L. Appelrouth.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Stacey Appelrouth; son, Scott (Amie) Appelrouth of Oak Park, Calif.; daughter, Lisa Appelrouth Guzmán of Sparks, Nev.; and sisters-in-law, Rachel Appelrouth, Arlene Appetrouth, and Connie Appelrouth. Grandchildren, Alex Appelrouth, Julia Appelrouth, Talia Guzmán, Diego Guzmán, and Olivia Appelrouth. Two stepchildren, Janice Dec (John) and David Patton (Gay), and four step-grandchildren, Chris Dec, Stacey Dec, David Patton, and Stephen Patton. Nephew, Stewart Appelrouth, and niece, Eileen Appelrouth Farr, both of Miami Fla., as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mitchell loved life, learning, and connecting with friends and family near and far. His kindness, wisdom, and cherished ability to make everyone feel heard will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 5th, at Temple Or-Atid, 10625 Patterson Ave. Interment will follow at B'nai Shalom Cemetery at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave.
