MONIQUE WALDON Obituary On March 11, 1960, Monique Van Waldon was born to two proud and loving parents, Harold and Wilhelmenia Waldon. From the very beginning, she was surrounded by love, faith, and a nurturing spirit that shaped her into the remarkable person she would become. Monique grew up in a warm and bustling home filled with love, laughter, and the vibrant energy of her four siblings. As the third eldest child, her brothers and sister created countless cherished memories that they often reminisce about.
After a life dedicated to serving God and others, Monique peacefully departed this world on October 24, 2024, in Lexington, South Carolina, at the home of her brother, Andre, and sister-in-law, Denise. For nearly four years, Andre and Denise provided her with exceptional care, filled with love, comfort, and dignity.
During her formative years, Monique attended Sumter public schools. In the 1970s, she and her family took a significant step in their spiritual journey by becoming baptized members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It was during this period that she was enrolled at Mt. Pisgah Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist boarding school in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Monique graduated in June 1978.
Following her high school graduation, Monique pursued higher education at Oakwood University, formerly Oakwood College, in Huntsville, Alabama, where she received a Social Work Bachelors Degree. Her commitment to academic excellence and service was evident during her time there. She was hired as one of the Assistant Deans for Carter Hall, the female dormitory, where she provided guidance, mentorship, and support to the young ladies. This experience marked the beginning of her lifelong dedication to serving others and creating meaningful connections.
After leaving Oakwood, Monique returned home. She embarked on a fulfilling career with Babcock Center and the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs. There she worked tirelessly and passionately until her well-earned retirement.
Throughout her career, Monique was known for her strong work ethic, compassionate nature, and unwavering commitment to excellence. She built meaningful relationships with her colleagues and those she served, often going above and beyond to ensure the success of her team and the satisfaction of her clients or community members.
Monique experienced three profound passions in her life, each a testament to her love, strength, and faith. The first passion was the birth of her daughter, Shameka Charity Waldon. From the moment Shameka entered her world, she brought boundless energy and a zest for life. Feisty and full of spirit, Shameka kept Monique on her toes and filled her life with joy and purpose. Shameka was her heartbeat. Tragically, Monique had to say goodbye to Shameka on April 30, 2021, following a very brief illness. Though her passing left an irreplaceable void, her vibrant spirit remained a source of strength for Monique.
Another of Moniques great passions was her grandsons, Jayvin and Ziyon. These young boys rekindled her sense of adventure and kept her heart full, much like their mother had. There was nothing she would not do for her boys. Their laughter and playful antics brought light to her days, and her deep love for them was evident in her parting words to her family: "Yall, please take care of my boys."
Moniquess most enduring and notable passion for the world was her gift of music. Her voice, a divine instrument, and her talent for playing were a blessing to everyone she encountered. Her melodies resonated deeply with her family, friends, and the church families of Berea SDA and Union Station AME, as well as countless other choirs, groups, and congregations in the surrounding areas of Sumter and beyond. Whether it was for a revival, a wedding, or a home-going celebration, Monique was always there, offering her heart and soul through song and testimony.
God endowed Monique with a remarkable ability to move His children through music. She did not hesitate to use her talent to inspire, comfort, and uplift, delivering sermons in song for her Maker. Her legacy as Gods songstress will forever echo in the hearts of all who were blessed to hear her sing and play.
Monique was preceded in death by her daughter Shameka Charity Waldon; her parents- Harold & Wilhelmenia Waldon; and her brother- Harold Waldon, Jr.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories - her two grandsons Jayvin and Ziyon Waldon of Sumter, South Carolina; her three siblings - Pastor Brent Sr. (Jacqueline) Waldon of Leesburg, Florida, Andre Sr. (Denise) Waldon of Lexington, South Carolina, and Rosalyn (Dorrence) Hamilton of Riverside, California; her adopted sister Laura Plowden; her sister-in-law - Ann Waldon of Sanford, Florida; her aunts - Mary Green of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Barbara Wilson-Duffin of Temple-Hills, Maryland, Willie Mae Wilson of Sumter, South Carolina, Amelia Waldon of Atlanta, Georgia, Beverly (John) Dicks of Columbia, South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, co-workers and friends.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May she rest peacefully until Resurrection Morning. Rest in peace, our beloved grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend.
