Obituary of Morton D. Shecter
With sorrow and much love, the family of Morton D. Shecter announces his passing on the 9th of March, 2023, at the age of 87 years. He died peacefully surrounded by his family. Mort will be lovingly remembered by wife of 58 years, Nina; children: Robb (with wife, Lisa), Marc (with wife, Kindra), and Julie (with husband, Jason); grandchildren: Shira, Noah, Tova, and Eleanor; as well as many relatives and friends, including the congregants of Chabad Olympia, Temple Beth Hatfiloh, The Old Salts, and the members of Bring Networking Lacey. Mort was predeceased by his father, Albert; his mother, Edna; and his brother, Richard.
Mort will be remembered as an award-winning photographer, an activist for Russian Resettlement, and a loving Zayde to his grandchildren. He was also an entrepreneur with an eye toward innovation. Mort always had a joke to share with old friends and new, and loved bringing joy and humor to his many communities. He didn't need much to make him happy; a sweet snack and a friend to share it with was a recipe for a great day. Mort's family has many funny stories to share about his life in Rochester, his time serving in the Army as a Chaplain's Assistant in Korea, his early days of marriage in Rochester, New York, his middle years in Indianapolis, Indiana, and his later years in Washington State. Mort had a knack for turning a calm chat into uproarious laughter, and his family hopes to continue the tradition.
All are welcome to join Mort's funeral and service at Masonic Memorial Park on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests a donation to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (https://www.ushmm.org/support), one of the many places to which Mort enjoyed donating.
Mort's family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Providence St. Peter Hospital Olympia for their care and compassion.
