Celebration of Life for Jewell Pearson Sr.

Today, we celebrate the life of Jewell Pearson Sr. — a man whose dedication to service, curiosity, and love for all things fast made every day an adventure worth taking.

Jewell entered this world on December 15, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, and was lovingly raised by Robert Lamar and Willa Mae Pearson. From an early age, he grew up with a natural drive to learn, build, and explore. At just 15, he began working alongside his Uncle Bennie, who introduced him to the world of cars — a passion that would stay with him for life. From that moment on, Jewell wasn’t just fixing engines; he was chasing dreams.

He carried that same determination into his service with the United States Air Force, where he joined in 1960 and served proudly as a Flight Leader during the Vietnam War. After nearly eight years of honorable service, Jewell brought his discipline and leadership into every part of his life that followed.

Education and excellence were cornerstones of who he was. While working full-time for General Motors, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Purdue University — a testament to his hard work, intelligence, and perseverance. He built a rewarding career at GM, where he started in 1968 and retired in 2001, always respected for his dedication and steady hand in leadership, and taking away trusting and loving friendships that would last a lifetime.

For those who knew Jewell, it was impossible to miss his love for cars — especially the ones that could move. His first car, lovingly named The Moon Doogie, marked the beginning of a lifelong relationship with racing and restoration. Whether he was turning wrenches, fine-tuning engines, or sharing stories from the track, Jewell found pure joy in the hum of horsepower. In 2007, he proudly won first place at the Buick Nationals — an achievement that reflected not only his skill but his passion for the sport and the community around it.

Jewell was an active member of Buick and Corvette clubs, where he built friendships that went beyond car shows and road trips. He loved the fellowship, the laughter, and the shared mission of giving back to the community through club events and charitable causes.

But most importantly, Jewell had a circle of family and friends who supported and prayed earnestly for him until the end of his days. His salvation came toward the end of his life. His relationship with Jesus comforted him and gave him the strength to live the final days with a deep gratitude.

He is survived by his sister, Angela Andino-Fleming (Charles Fleming Jr.), his children — Sherri Lynn Bass (Anthony Bass), Derrick Evans Pearson, Julie Anita Zarraga, Heather Evon Pearson, Jewell Evans Pearson Jr., and Joseph Cavin (Patricia), his beloved granddaughter, Khelsey Simone Zarraga, and his first cousin, JoAnn Norris.

He will be remembered for his laughter, his wisdom, his drive (literally), and the countless lives he touched along the way.

In memory of Jewell, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans, organizations that reflect his courage and commitment to service.
