Mrs. Betty Sue Johnson Smith, age 95, of Winder, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025 at The Landing Senior Living Center of Winder.
Betty was born on Feb. 26, 1930 in Lawrenceville, Ga. She was the youngest of 7 children born to Henry Thomas Johnson & Ada (Fulcher) Johnson.
She married Olen Dean Smith on July 28, 1951, and had 2 sons, Cary Dean & Gregory Dale.
They lived in Seymour, IA for 12 years where they enjoyed the small-town life & local events like Pancake Day & Old Settlers Day. They spent their weekends enjoying little league ball games & high school basketball & football games. They were also in a bowling league and would get together for card games with the many friends they had made.
They moved back to Gresham Park, GA where Betty worked in the Meadowview Elementary School lunchroom for several years. Her favorite hobby for many years was raising & grooming her puppies - poodles, keeshonds and shih tzus.
They moved back to Betty's hometown of Lawrenceville where they lived several years before moving to Cleveland, Ga. It's there they discovered their love for motor home traveling. They traveled throughout the United States for 14 years before Dean's death in 2005.
Betty lived with her son, Greg, in DeFuniak Springs, FL and Cleveland, GA until Greg's death in 2020. She has been a resident of Winder, GA since.
Betty is survived by her son Cary and his wife, Debbie of Winder, Ga, 2 grandsons, Justin of Atlanta, Ga and Travis (Jessica) of Bogart, GA, 2 great grandsons, Wyatt & River of Bogart, Ga, brother-in-law Gary (Jean) Smith of Albany, OR and numerous nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Ada Johnson, brothers Henry (Helen) Johnson, Ezzard (Ann), Johnson, sisters, Lucille (William) Pate, Clarice Fouts, Annie (Lloyd) Jones, Mattie Lou (Hubert) Thomas, son, Greg Smith, infant granddaughter, Stephanie Smith.
Betty will be greatly missed by her family & friends.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Maddox-Carter Memorial Home, Winder, is entrusted with the arrangements.
