Muriel Wobecky Cowell
Muriel Wobecky Cowell, aka Becky, passed away on July 11, 2024. She was born on February 2, 1925 in New Bedford, MA, to Englebert and Yvonne Wobecky. She married George W. Cowell on September 15, 1945 prior to graduating from St. Lukes Nursing School in 1946. Muriel worked at St. Lukes Hospital where she was Head Nurse before moving to Waquoit Village, MA.
Muriel and George welcomed daughter, Charlene and son, David. They were fortunate to live in several places including Washington DC, Fresno, CA, Carlsbad, NM and Waquoit Village on Cape Cod, MA prior to moving to Florida and settling in Port Charlotte.
On the Cape she was employed by the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA). Her favorite part of her job was working with first time mothers and their newborns. She was involved with all the functions of the VNA and one of her best memories was when she participated in a parade in downtown Falmouth, MA. She was dressed as a nurse from the 20’s walking with her bicycle. There is when she met one of her best friends, Marie Barney and they stayed in touch until Muriel’s passing.
Upon moving to Port Charlotte, both Muriel and George were active with the senior center and theater group. George became involved in doing skits and was a big band singer with the center’s band while Muriel was in charge of costumes. She and George traveled to Manchester, NH every summer to take care of their granddaughter, Andrea.
Their last move was to Fort Pierce, FL to be near their daughter, Charlene. Muriel became involved with Parkview Baptist Church and helped teaching pre-school and sang in the church choir. She also became a member of the Pilot Club of Fort Pierce and the Pilot Club of St. Lucie County. One of her favorite things was being a model in the annual Pilot fashion show.
Muriel was preceded in death by her spouse, George in 1998, her brother, Englebert “Bert” Wobecky and his family and sister, Kathryn “Kay” Miller and her family.
Muriel leaves her children, Charlene (James) Moses, David (Janine) Cowell; granddaughter, Andrea (Kent) Cowell Hastings; special nephew, Steven Miller; cousins, Janet Wobecky Pierce and her family and Pauline Kuthan and her family.
Services: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Haisley Funeral Home, Fort Pierce with a reception to follow in the Haisley Reception Center.
