Muriel Ardith Young was born in
Omaha, NE on August 15th, 1928, to Mary & O'Dell Peterson of
Pender, NE. Her mother Mary passed away December 4, 1928. Her aunt and uncle, Meta & Bill Jahde, took her home after the funeral to
Albion, NE. The plan was to raise her until she was a little older, but she remained with them and Albion became her home for the rest of her life.
As a young girl she lived many years over the Jahde Hardware Store in downtown Albion. Meta made sure she was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church. She became a lifelong member, and the church was always very important to her. She spent many summers on the farm of her stepsister & brother-in-law, Elenora & Paul Briese.
She attended Albion Public School, graduating in May of 1946. In high school she was active in operetta, yearbook & newspaper staff and was selected Color Day Queen. Her senior year she was class president. She worked at Sherwood's Drugstore for 25¢ an hour after school & on Saturdays.
On August 29, 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, George Young. They moved to the family farm the terrible winter of 1948. The downtown girl was now a country girl! They were snowed in all winter. After losing their first child, Mary Celeste, at birth, they were blessed with four more children: Julie, David, Douglas & Joel. She spent her life being a devoted wife and mother. Muriel & George spent 53 wonderful years together until he passed in May of 2001.
They were blessed with many friends and were active in the Albion community and Zion Lutheran Church. They loved to travel, go to Nebraska Husker games and never missed the opportunity to go to their children's and grandchildren's activities.
Muriel was a woman of many talents. She was very artistic and was known for her beautiful china painting. She painted and sewed dresses for porcelain dolls. She made many quilts and belonged to the quilting group at church.
She had a great sense of humor and kept everyone entertained with her stories. She was loving and patient and will be missed by many.
Muriel is survived by her four children: Julie (Leo) Getzfred of Hastings, NE; David (Carol) Young of Leland, NC; Douglas (Pamela) Young of
Albion, NE; and Joel (Mary) Young of Columbus, NE; six grandchildren: Justin (Tara) Getzfred of Hastings, NE; Jeff (Jessica) Getzfred of
Omaha, NE; Kyle Young of
Omaha, NE; Molly (Everton) Bailey of Dallas, TX; and Kaden Young and Gabbi Young of Columbus, NE; step-grandson, Randy Vicks of Wilmington, NC; eight great-grandchildren: Alexis, Wyatt, Georgianna, Marshall, Bennett, Brittany, Russell, and Ellis; five great-great-grandchildren; along with two nieces, four nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
