Myong Choe Obituary

Myong Kyu Choe of Fairfax, Virginia, passed away from complications of Parkinson's disease on September 25, 2025. He was 91 years old.

He was born in Yangpyong, in the countryside east of Seoul, South Korea, on October 20, 1934.

Myong graduated from Hanyang University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for the Voice of the United Nations Command in the 1960s where he rose to the position of Chief of Engineering, overseeing all manner of audio and visual broadcasts to promote the UN cause to the North and South Korean audiences.

With his wife Sun "Sunny" and three young kids, he immigrated to the US in 1971 and settled in Fairfax. As a newly arrived immigrant with little knowledge of English, he started out with any job he could get that didn't require too much speaking, such as fixing TVs. As his English improved so did his job prospects and he was eventually hired as an engineer for ABC News Bureau in Washington DC where he worked for 30 years until his retirement. He worked on Nightline with Ted Koppel, World News Tonight with Peter Jennings as well as covering presidential press conferences and State of the Union Addresses. Myong loved his work, took pride in it and made good friends there.

Myong was a 30+ years member of the Korean United Methodist Church of Greater Washington, where he was also a Deacon. His retirement years were very productive and fulfilling. He golfed, volunteering as a starter at Twin Lakes Golf Club. He volunteered weekly for many years at the Fairfax Training Center where he fed meals to a disabled resident, and he travelled the world with Sunny.

Myong was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Sun Kyu, and three siblings. He is survived by his brothers: Paek Kyu, Un Kyu, O Kyu; his children: Kyong, Mok and Min; and 6 grandchildren: Tyler, Kameron, Allison, Benjamin, Kai and Southerly; and many nephews and nieces.

Please feel free to share a story or leave a note of condolences on Myong's Tribute page.

In lieu of flowers, the Choe family welcomes contributions to The Michael J Fox Foundation in memory of Myong Kyu Choe who suffered from Parkinson's disease.
